My try at a Really Nice Rebuild Marantz 2245 2270

Hey David, C407/C408 are upgraded to 3.3uf Wima MKS2 mostly everyone does this. The big orange caps are stock, some pre boards have em some do not. I use the Silmic bipolars because I think they add a little body to the vocals which I like, YMMV!

Thanks Pat.

I just figured out why I got so confused. Those big orange caps must be C416 and C417 shown in the 2270 schematic (as electrolytics?), but they are mismarked on the P400 board as R418 and R419 resistors and also only jumpered. I had to follow the traces to figure it out.

Well, at least I am past that hurdle now!

Yes, C321,322,331 and 332 are WIMA MKS2 types.
I try to match the electrolytic value if I can fit film types in the available space. C321, C322 can be changed to 4.7uF and C331, C332 to 3.3uF without degrading the FM frequency response from the published specification listed in the manual, 50Hz to 15kHz ±1dB, (this was determined empirically), C333, C334 are 1uF stacked film types, they fit fine and match the original value.

I use Panasonic FC types for the other electrolytic capacitors, I haven't found a good reason to use any other brand/series.

R365 is the separation adjustment, it is adjusted for maximum and same separation between channels, see section 13 in the service manual.

Since this is a 2270, do you think the bipolars will give me the same improvements? Where yours has the large films, mine is jumpered.

If so, will the Nichicon ES bipolar come close to a Silmic bipolar?

depends on what you are looking for sonically. ES are also very nice.

Can you tell me what the diodes are in the upper right; part numbers and locations?

Do they apply to the 2270 power amps?

Anything else not mentioned for the 2245 that you would recommend for the 2270?

I am tracking down the very last items for my restore.

When I do another 2245 2270 on the Amp Boards I will choose just to replace C751, C762 and C763 film wise. The Sonicap .1uf Gen II is an exact size direct drop in for C762.

They are for the heat sink mounted bias diodes, just there in case I break one, not needed.

I was waiting and waiting for the Mundorf's to burn in and they have, but there was a slight high end anomily I was hearing that was bothering me a little. So out they came and all was well. Kind of weird because they are stellar on the phono board. I then wanted to redo all the other locations to make sure all was well and the pic above is what I ended up with. With this Preamp Board configuration it is nothing but smooth and lovely classic Marantz with nice body and excellent transparency, I am really enjoying it now. I am one who could not rest untill I got it right.

I know it is a 6 year old thread but what values are these caps? I am restoring 2270 and would like to use these.

*LED's installed, I only use LED's for the dial lights, all bi-pins are replaced the tuning ind. bulb is replaced, and I use a fuse style for the meter as I feel it has a more even light distribution for that location. Added new velum.

I am fully agreed. I have change for 3 - 4 times coupling capacitors. Sound becomes metallic for my taste. Vintage amps lose signature. Yes, WIMA shows better characteristic but something does not work.
 
This is an old thread.
The original Preamp board comes with electrolytic capacitors in all the positions and sounds very good.
And yes I have heard many complain of harshness if too many films are installed.
I will put up a pic of how I currently do this preamp board.
As an alternative the .22uf film audio caps from Parts Express are reasonably priced and fit nicely.

Yikes, I didn't realize it's been 10 years since you started this post, patfont. First and foremost, I want to thank you for everything you've done in this thread, one idiot's guide to rebuilding the 2245, and your iconic electrolytic capacitor shoot-out. I have read all of these threads completely and can't believe how much time has gone into these.

I purchased a 2245 in early 2020 and figured it was time to roll my sleeves up and do some work on this unit. There is some distortion when I use the volume nob and bass. I was planning on fixing those two issues but ended up in a rabbit hole after going through your threads.

I know this might be a reach but I'm not extremely well-versed in audio capacitors or components. I've tried to do everything I can on my end, spending countless hours after work trying to put a list together of all the items I need in order to match your setup here. Unfortunately, I seem to be missing some info, some of the components are "obsolete" now, and the prices on some of these components are astronomical now. With that being said, I figured I should stop trying to go at this on my own and reach out with the hopes that you might have a list of everything you used in the final version of your 2245 build. I know it might be a long shot but I figured I'd ask.

Again, thank you for EVERYTHING you've done here. I'm happy to DM you or share the google sheet I've been using to track all the items I need if you think that would be helpful.
