My vintage/modern mashup, now with tubes 'n horns!

Jailtime

Standin' on a corner
This rig has been in the making for the last few years. I had the Fisher and the horns sitting idle since about 2009, so I decided to actually finish up some of my projects. This is the result, pretty much a 180 from the direction of my old rig. Previous system here - http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=534120.

Speaker cabs are a slightly modified version of dnewma04's cabs from AK Fest a few years ago. AE Lambda TD15M does the bass duties, Altec 802-8G with Radian diaphragms and 511B horn covers the top end. The horn is treated with Dynamat, and spiked to the bass cab.

Still have the Music Hall DAC25.2 for digital tunes, and Rotel RQ970BX for a phono stage.

Crossovers are Z19 built with Solen parts. Cables are Avanti Audio standard for Fisher to xover, Avanti Allegro for xover to drivers. The sound absorption panels are just 4" oak stuffed with Ultra Touch SCS.

Fisher 500C, just restored. Total rebuild, I was hoping to go modern with my amplfication, but this old Fisher is going to keep me happy for a long time.

Clearaudio Aurum Classic on my hot-rodded Empire 398. Deck and base of the Empire are Dynamatted. I also bypassed the original headshell sled contacts, and rewired the tonearm with Cardas wire, terminated with Cardas jacks.

Damn Kyle, that's my kind of setup you have there. My guess is you aren't missing the DQ-10's nor the Soundcraftsmen. :D.

Very well done!

What a fantastic system - nicely done!

I'd love to hear those speakers - such a nicely executed build using drivers I could imagine work very well together.

Both systems are excellent. I'm interested in the similarities between the two and where each system excels.

The old SS rig was more forgiving than this one, it could make any recording sound acceptable. This new rig is much better at retrieving detail, sometimes at the expense of easy listening. It's strange to say, but the old high power SS rig with the DQs was the warm, easy listening type. Both systems could pull you into the music, it's just that the new one needs much better source quality to do it.

The DQs had a very wide soundstage, these Altecs aren't as wide, but much deeper. Bass definition is far superior with the Lambdas. The new speakers are very lively and dynamic, they can create impact at low listening levels (75-80 dBA). The DQs were a great sounding speaker, don't get me wrong there, but I prefer the dynamic abilities of an efficient horn speaker.

I'll just throw another wrench in this comparison and mention that the Dahlquists were the better rock speaker, and the Altec/Lambdas are the better jazz/folk speaker.
