My weekend find - KLH

tiga

Super Member
Hello! So this weekend I found a set of KLH speakers at a yard sale. They are large floorstanders with the label on the back of them that states:

KLH Professional Series Model 41
4th order ported
12" ferrite magnet
5 1/4 " Dynamic
1" soft dome
Crossover - 900hz and 2800 hz.

They were in really good shape and I picked them up for $15. I'm assuming they are a low-end model from the 80's but I was pretty excited about getting some big speakers with a 12" woofer so I thought what the heck. Unfortunately I can't find any information on them. Does anyone here know anything about them - when they were made, overall quality, etc? Thank you all for your help.

I hooked them up to the zone 2 amp of my Onkyo 606. Very full and warm sounding. THose 12" woofers really thump. I find the upper frequencies a bit recessed. I was listening to a Robert Cray CD and the vocals seem a little buried. I think these could benefit from EQ adjustments. (or maybe a new tweeter? - thoughts anyone - never done it but I'd be willing to tinker. Again for $15 why not if it could benefit.

Update

Just an update - I had a chance to play with these over the weekend and found out why the high's were so "recessed" - the tweeters don't work (doh!).

So I'm now looking for replacement tweeters - any thoughts on what would be a good tweeter to put in there? The Goldwood GT-336 from PE looks to be a similar design - although the current tweeter is a soft dome and not titanium. Will that be a big concern? Thanks.
