This is my Yamaha Stack.
I know everything looks just a bit cramped.
I specifically situated it this way just for this picture.
The speakers are normally a bit further apart from the receivers.

Anyway here's what I'm currently rockin' my vinyl with:

Denon 23f phonograph on top
Yamaha CR-820 (set in place specifically for this picture)
Yamaha CR-2020
Yamaha CR-2040
1 Pair of Sansui 3 way speakers (Cheap! I know, but they will soon be replaced by a set of NS-670's)
1 Pair of Kenwood 4 way speakers (one of which is barely visible at the bottom right corner)

Nice! Gotta love the Yamaha... I have the same receivers as you, with the addition of the mighty cr-3020. It's a beast!
The cr-2040 is a fantastic receiver. Not the best looking of the bunch, but a fine performer. You'll like them even more once you get the ns-670's.

Yeah, I got the 2020 and the 820 first. The 820 was alright. But, the 2020 definitely got the job done. And I just wanted to know which one of the higher models was REALLY the one to have. I was deciding between the 2040 and the 3020.... without ever having heard either one. So, I did some research I'd basically figured that if you want the power, definitely go for the 3020. But, if you really want the better quality sound, then go for the 2040. So, that's basically what I did. I could care less if it'll win a beauty contest. All I care is that my ears are happy when the vinyl's cranking away. And yes, I can't wait for the 670's to arrive.
 
Yes I agree that the 2040 is the better sounding of them all. And a hell of a lot cheaper than the 3020..(if you can find one)!
Careful having Yamaha speakers shipped. They are known for the magnate shifting if dropped, bumped hard ect...

Good to know. Will definitely keep that in mind. And if I'm not mistaken, only about 2,000 of the 3020's were made because they just weren't selling like their little brother units which by comparison were practically flying off the shelves like hotcakes, and are still fairly common.
 
I lovee that. Will have to gather my xx40s around for similar pic. Have 640, 840, 1040 and 2040. Basic luck watching CL and BT here got me the last three of those as I had 640 from 80s. Cheers!

The 2040 is technically a xx20 series. All the xx40's used IC chips except for the 2040.... which used the same formula as the xx20 series. So, basically the 3020 is considered the king of the Yamahas while the 2040 is considered the queen. But, under the hood, they're technically the same series. And that's partially why the 2040's are getting harder to find. Because the 2040's didn't use IC chips like the rest of the xx40 series.
 
Very nice! I've been using a CR-820 for the last several months with KEF 103.2 reference speakers and I absolutely love the sound. I ended up buying a second set of KEF 103.2's because these sound so good paired with the Yamaha. I currently have them stacked with the top pair upside down, and the soundstage completely opens up doing this. Both pairs have been restored with the known leaky transistor or crossover issue fixed.

I also picked up a Marantz 2325 monster receiver during this time, and while I really appreciate the Marantz and it's warm signature sound, I find that I much prefer the Yammy's detailed natural sound. So the Marantz had to go and is now sold!

I am expecting the delivery of a CR-2040 sometime today, and I'm very excited about it to say the least! I plan on getting it fully restored by a local AudioKarma member at some point this summer.

I'm now working on acquiring a pair of NS-1000m's that I will be trading my Sony PS-X70 turntable towards it's purchase (I plan on eventually replacing the Sony with a Yamaha turntable). Obviously I'm really diggin the Yamaha gear! My first stereo system was all Yamaha bought new back in 1987 so there is a little bit of nostalgia involved.

Now I'm thinking about both modern and vintage Yamaha integrated amps and separates as well. Yup.. I've been bitten by the Yamaha bug for sure.

The 820 was pretty nice. If you got one, you're definitely not missing out. But the 2020 has a few controls which seem to make a rather noticeable difference on the high end to bring it out more. Beyond that, they sound very similar. The warmth is definitely there on both. I'm still debating what I'll do with my 820 now. The 2020 and the 2040 are almost like 2 sides of the same coin in terms of the sort of sound that I'm after. So, I'm definitely keeping those. You will notice the 2040 is very bright, and very clean like a modern receiver; especially the tuner section. It does seem to lack just a bit of the middle range warmth that the 2020 has. The 2020 and 2040 have similar, yet very distinct sounds. But, they both sound great to me.

Speakers do make a difference. I just got the 670's. They sound promising, but as it turns out they need some work unfortunately. The woofers I think may need replacing because they just don't sound quite right; like maybe they're blown or just worn out. But, the other 2 speakers on each one were totally off the chain. So, I'm very optimistic.

That's interesting about the 2040 sounding bright. I've read other posts where people say the warmth is there with the 2040, but you just have to dial it in and pair it with the proper speakers. Now I'm looking into picking up a set of JBL L100's! I grew up listening to these speakers as a kid and I used them as a teenager in the early 90s. My parents bought them in the 70's, so the nostalgia is definitely there for me when it comes to these speakers. Unfortunately they are not to be found (can't stand thinking about what might've happened to them). I've heard that vintage speakers like these might be a good balance for the natural sound Yamahas of the 70s era. The other receiver I'd like to get my hands on would be a Pioneer SX-1010 which my parents used along with the JBL's.

The Marantz sounded very nice, and the warmth was very much there. Sounded really good, but the bass was too punchy or forward/pushy for my liking. I do like bass a lot, and I listen to electronica with heavy bass, but the bass on the low end and mids was a bit overwhelming on the Jazz tracks I listened to. The kick drums were too dominating and the mids seemed almost boxy or muddy. When I hooked up the CR-820 again, it just sounded more detailed and more natural to my ears. I'm sure after a full restoration the Marantz' sound would clean up and sound even better to me, and I'll probably regret letting it go, but as of right now I'm sold on the Yamaha natural sound.

I'd be into getting my hands on a CR-1040 or CR-2020, but at this point I'd probably lean more towards the vintage Yamaha integrated amps. Also interested in Yamaha's current line of integrated amps and receivers. The WXC-50 looks like it might be worth looking into for streaming music, net radio, and SiriusXM as well.
