mystery shure p-mount

Awaiting delivery of cart that just says shure on top. I have read many posts of swapping stylii on shure. The main problem is the plastic being in the way, this one is bare. It's a V bottom. I have n75s, n70s, a n97b, sc35c, n35s, 97e. I'm planning to try them all. I have n44 also but I know the vta is different. Any thoughts on how to identify what it is, coil resistance? I know there are a few p mounts out there. I'm putting it in a 1/2" adapter so it won't have to track at 1.25 grams. Any thoughts?

Wild guess, Shure Me75P or variant of.

99% of Shure's p-mount bodies are basically Era IV M97s without a mounting cap and with p-mount pins sticking out the back. Shure made it easy for us. The other 1% are p-mount V-15s, but you're not likely to have one of those.

The 44, 55, 91 and 7x models were all flat bottom gals. The 92, 95, 97 and V15s after the II are v bottom.

A needle for an M75 cart will work in an original series M97 cartridge (and your cart if it is a p-mount version of an M97) and sound very good. You just have to trim enough of the plastic finger grip in selected places for it to seat properly.

Shure P-Mounts are not the same as Era lV M97's.

You can mix and match until your head spins. When you get the cartridge, post a photo of it so that it can be identified.

Those are fun! Not sure if all of the styli you mentioned will all fit, but you have a V-bottom Pmount with no plastic, you have tons more options that I am aware of... To name a few:

Current Shure: N92E and N97xE (that one is heavy, so you probably don't want to try it on a Pmount arm unless you have a wide range of VTF adjustment. A half-inch adaptor will be fine.)

Vintage Shure: N92LT (or LTP-2) (.4x.7 bonded), N94LT (.2x.7 bonded), N96LT (.2x.7 nude), N97LT (nude hyperelliptical)

Most of these can still be found, if you want to pay $$$ for Shure originals.

M95ED and M95HE styli will also fit, but likely won't adhere to Pmount spec. Same with many of the Realistic branded Shures like the 4x-8x Styli for the R1000XT series.

Then there are like beeeeelions of aftermarket styli, too. EVG, Jico, and LP Gear Styli are some popular choices.

Should be here today. Hoping the 97b will work, it has the damping brush. I got it to use in my v15rs but it sounded lifeless, coils must not LINE up. Didn't like the generic 97e either. Probably try generic n92e or 97lt, will post a pic, nude when I can.

Got it! Can't figure how to add photo. Has decal on top, shure. Coils measure 1.5k. 97b, shure, fits and sounds great. N70ed fit. Generic 97e went halfway in, didn't force it. N70 was really tight. Got the 97b for $10 on eBay, still available for$35. So far $7 well spent. I see many unbranded carts that look like at3400 or at95 for $6 on eBay. Might try one next.

Holy crap! Been listening to my m44e and 5 different stylus, including m447. This mystery cart with the 97b is amazing. Percussion just jumps out and voices have...timber? It may not be correct but all my favorite albums are lined up, I'm on my fifth now. Having fun now!

Possible Shure p-mounts with similar resistance:

Resistance 1550 ohms, inductance 700mH - LTP-2, M92 LT, M96 LT, M97 LT (these have similar internals electrically to the M95ED, M95HE and Era IV M97 models, such as the M97HE)

1550 ohms, 650mH - MP94E (similar electrically to the M97xE)

For some reason Shure started leaving out the specs for resistance and inductance in many user guides and brochures - the only specs they provided were for weight, tracking forces, trackability, channel separation and output voltage. So other cartridges which are probably also 1550 ohms, but for which most Shure brochures, user guides and catalogues omit any specifications for resistance and inductance, include the following cartridges:

M92E (p-mount version, not the original half-inch mount M91-based M92E model), M99E, M104E, M105E, M110HE, M111HE.

There are probably quite a few other models which I don't have information about, including OEM models.
