Mystery Speaker Identification!

Hello, I was wondering if anyone could help me identify these mystery speakers. My dad says that when he bought them he was told they were studio monitors, made from a kit, circa late 50's early 60's. FWIW, I love the way they sound, on anything from vinyl to tape to CD to the television!
Any help would be appreciated!

Check the PDF docs from EV's present-day site -- I've been frantically editing the earlier post.
I have a soft spot in my heart for all things EV -- well... most things EV.

After shining my flashlight into the grill at an angle, I have determined that the woofers are Electro Voice Wolverines (I have read these are the budget model of woofers?) and I can see a smaller driver to the left of the woofer and of course the horn above them. Does that make this a 3 way model? (I am still learning)

Yes, indeed -- sounds like it.
Drivers could all be Wolverine (e.g., an LS12 or LS12A twincone "fullrange" as woofer, plus a TW35 tweeter and MR10 midrange) or the MR and tweeter might be "better" EV models.

Nothing wrong with the Wolverine drivers. They were (and still are) relatively inexpensive, but were nicely made and sound fine. Indeed, some of them I prefer to the more expensive EVs (the EV Wolverine LT-12 coax being an example -- an unassuming but very pleasant little 12" coaxial loudspeaker).

Anyone please correct me if I'm wrong. but if you need to get to the drivers, I think there's a screw at the bottom of the grill and after it is removed the grill slides up and off.

I thought the (front?) panel slid off from the bottom... but I've never :( owned an Aristocrat so I am not 100% certain. There definitely is a trick to it, and you may well be correct -- I do believe it is well documented here at AK and/or elsewhere on teh webz.

google turned up this from @Andyman

You're probably right - it's been 30 years since I had one of these.

Aristocrats! Sometimes taking a flash picture of the front at the right sort of angle will help reveal what's behind the grill. You probably already know this but these were designed to sit right up against the walls in the corner of a room, the placement helps the bass response. These will with very little power and will sound great with a tube powered amplifier.

Sounds like I need to rearrange my bedroom!
I have been looking into tube phono preamps, any recommendations?

There's other's here that can fill you in on a tube phono preamp. There are a number of good ones out there, but I have no idea which ones they are. Consider acquiring a tube powered integrated amplifier, something like a Dynaco SCA-35 or a Lafayette 236. Warning; this is a delightful rabbit hole of a pursuit.

Thanks, I've abandoned looking for preamps now and am just looking around at those online. I will be sure to keep my eyes peeled in the local used market as well.

The grill does slide out at the bottom. Couple of screws.
As soon as I saw the picture of the speaker, I assumed Mark Hardy would have the literature up. Nice to know he is still on the beat...
