Mystery speakers, help identify

These would be worth a look, I have used them in a couple of projects, they are very smooth and priced just right to put into an $8 speaker!

I think we cross posted a bit, but yes the cabinets are constructed very well. Whoever was in charge of mounting the components (especially the tweeters) could have used some quality control lessons from the guy who built the cabinets.

I think you and I might be on the same page. Saw a post where you picked up some Radio Shack Nova 15's. It was all I could do to resist picking up the exact same model earlier this week. Only wanted $7 and the foam was in excellent shape. Hope you follow this thread, with some help (a lot) I might end up with some nice speakers.

I will certainly try to give them a listen this weekend, I agree on the quality control issues, this could be a fun little project, I can always use another set of small speakers (just ask my wife!), I gave those Nova 15's to my son, he is still using them as his mains, great little near field speaker. :thmbsp:

Electrophonic. LOL! The name just screams quality.

Did a quick ebay search and found a system that has a set of speakers pretty similar to the ones I picked up. In that search, I found another system that I just couldn't help but post a pic of.

My wife would tell me the same! :nono:

How efficient are those Nova 15's? I've really started to simplify things around the house and need something that can be driven by low watts (like sonic t-amp or small, small tube amp low watts).
 
I am not sure of their efficiency rating, I would guess Very high 80s or very low 90s, I ran them for awhile on my Marantz 2220 (20WPC) and they played as loud as I wanted them in the garage, I don’t think that they would work very well with a 5 or 10 watt amp though.
 
morse also sold all-in-one systems without electrophonic. they were sold at stores like western auto, otasco, etc. they were not particularly high quality by any means. funny, i used to know a guy that had one of those disco light electrophonics. it really sounded like crap. the lights were pretty cool though. NOT! my aunt recently offered me an electrophonic console. early 70's solid state. heavy. but i don't have room for it. my uncle bought it at otasco (oklahoma tire and supply company) back around '72.
 
My new speaker day infatuation with this units is fading. As stated by others, these are obviously low-end speakers. The larger drivers still have potential to me. But as for now these will probably end up in the garage as my workshop speakers.
 
I have a set of speakers with that exact same logo on them. Look here:

The drivers in mine are also Morse speakers, although slightly different in appearance. No wizzer on 8" woofer, instead a mesh-like dustcap. There is a cone tweeter behind the horn diffusers up top. :yes: I like how they sound, smooth mids, like with your pair. The bass and high end aren't bad for a speaker their size, roughly 11" wide, 19" tall, and 8" deep. Free with a Soundesign receiver at a garage sale.

We need a Morse/Electrophonic appreciation thread in the same vein as the Radioshack one. I doubt we could get a serious thread going, but it would be fun to try!
 
Still interested in doing something with these speakers.

How hard would it be to add a port to extend the bass a bit? Is it possible to get a good ballpark on port size and length with the cabinet dimensions? Or is it necessary to know the driver specs? If the former, I could probably probably tinker with PVC pipe length until I came up with something.

The inside cabinet dimensions are: 10.5w x 12.0h x 4.0d inches.

These cabinets are solid enough to do some work on them, and I'd be willing to try.

I don't have a lot of stuff from them, but from what equipment I've heard elsewhere, I have no complaints. Really good stuff for the price range and build quality. I think the correct terminology would be that they got as much performance out of their components that they possibly could. :yes:
 
I got a chance to hook them up to my Marantz 2220, I found the bass acceptable, most likely all of the bass we can expect out of these drivers, fairly accurate, though not real deep, the highs were most definitely flat, just not a lot there, I think that a set of Dayton tweeters with a simple cap to filter the lows would probably make these a pretty good background speaker, just for grins, I hooked them up to my main system in the Living Room, the wife really liked the way they look but lets just say the Dynaco A-50s aren’t going anywhere any time soon.

That was my thought on them -- good background speaker. I still might look into the Dayton tweeters you linked to earlier. I suppose a port won't really make a difference in the bass then, but I'd be willing to try with a little help.
 
I am afraid that for port dimensions and such you will need someone far more knowledgeable than I, I will consider ordering a set of the Dayton tweeters, these might make a pretty nice set of garage speakers or even a decent bedroom speaker with a little help on the top end. :scratch2:
