mystery tube buffer - help?

so i've been looking at cheap chinese tube preamps/buffer amps, and stumbled on this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=121163396921

anyone have any idea what this is, exactly? it's not a guanzo preamp, and it uses two 6J1 tubes... it also doesn't seem to have a separate transformer, but rather it comes with a 120v to 12v wall wart. any advantages/disadvantages to something like this? it looks strikingly similar to this unit, as well: http://www.aliexpress.com/item/6J1-...-amplifier-inclu-PSU-110V-220V/936035636.html

The first question is: what is your intended use for this device?
The second question is: does this device fulfil the requirements for your intended use?

I can't think of any use for a tube preamp that doesn't have sufficient voltage to work in the linear part of the plate curves; but maybe you are attempting to add distortion to a guitar amp.

i'm looking for a buffer/pre-amp to make my signal (from ipod/other various digital sources) into something my regular receiver (old pioneer) will like better, with tube EQ characteristics. so basically a pre-amp, and there's a lot of options on ebay which people seem to love.

as you pointed out, it seems that the voltage supplied to the device is 12v, where other devices of this sort give their tubes around 170v (cf. this thread http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=306203).

this device is cheap, though, and doesn't require any soldering/work, unlike other kits which would benefit from custom cases, soldering a plug onto the transformer leads, etc.

just wondering if anyone has come across this device and what their experience was. thx!
