NAD 7100 VOLUME CONTROL

I picked up a NAD 7100 receiver a few years ago. Sounded great. I haven't used it since then. I tried it a few days ago, and now it has a serious issue with the volume control. The knob has no effect below about 10 o'clock — it plays LOUD and ONLY loud — I can't turn it down. The problem wasn't there before.

Hoping some Deoxit might fix it, I opened the unit up. The volume pot is inaccessible, totally surrounded by metal and circuit boards. I can't even see it. It seems that, to just to reach it with the Deoxit tube, I'd have to take the entire receiver apart, a massive job for a small fix. I'll just ditch the unit before doing that, which'll be a shame because it used to work perfectly and I loved the sound.

What am I missing? Does anyone have knowledge/experience with the 7100? How do I reach that pot?

bimasta, lifting the top board up would that make the pot easier to get to? Does the remote control work for the volume?

Put a 90 degree bend at the tip of the straw. This will allow aiming around corners and underneath stuff. While inside, clean the stereo/mono and soft clipping switches on the back panel.

NAD80, I couldn't lift the top board or anything else; it would require the entire disassembly I mentioned earler. I'm not stranger to the insides of a receiver, and some parts are always hard to get at (have to remove all the knobs, the faceplate, etc, just to reach a little switch, etc) and I've always found a way. This one flummoxed me totally. And I don't have the remote — the knob turns easily from stop to stop, it just cuts dead to Silence at 10 o'clock: it won't play softly. If it's a motorized pot (probably, don't know, can't see it) the remote would probably turn it easily, but I don't think that would fix it.

Sam, I can't even SEE the pot, it's completely barricaded. So it's not a matter of spraying under or around things — I have nothing to spray AT. I'd just be spraying blindly around, hitting everything EXCEPT the small openings in the pot that need it. And you're right, I would clean everything else that might need a cleaning, as a matter of course — but spraying those switches alone won't matter much if the volume doesn't work.

Maybe the pot has just failed, and needs replacing. I'd gladly do it, but same problem — I can't even see it or reach it.

I hope I'm just being incredibly stupid and someone will point out my idiotic mistake. Maybe Leesonic has the answer, he's the AK NAD genius isn't he...?

I wish I'd taken pictures when I had the cover off because it's hard to believe my description — it's inconceivable that any manufacturer would design a component with the volume pot so untouchable you can't even see it.

But NAD was always praised for sound quality, never its internal design.
