NAD Clipping HELP!

So I just got a sweet CL find.
(2) NAD 2100
(1) NAD 2400 THX
(1) NAD 1600 Pre/tuner with remote
all have manuals.
$125 for the lot.

I went through the units and the pre is good, just needs a little pot cleaning
Both 2100s seems good.
The 2400THX will play at whisper levels then clips and shuts down with ANY increase in volume.

I'm pretty good with speaker fixes but I know very little about amplifier electronics. How bad is this? Is it an easy/cheap fix or do I ebay it as a parts unit.

The package is still pretty sweet but I was hoping to biamp my PSB Stratus Golds with a 2100 and the 2400.
Any input would be greatly appreciated

Clipping may be the result of specific amp+speaker combinations. Can you test the amp that clips with other set of speakers?

I'm no help, but I would love to try a bi-amp setup on my Golds someday
 
I will definitely try that although the speakers I am using are some little advent indoor/outdoor speakers. If the NAD 2400THX can't handle those id have to say, I'm not impressed. It's worth a try though. Thanks.
 
The only checking out I did was plug it in and see that it powers up. When I was testing the amps I had them all stacked on each other and I just moved the rca inputs up the line and the speakers. Both 2100s played fine but the 2400 would flash the red light and shut down until I turned the volume back down. I've checked to be sure no wires were crossing. I've also checked all of the switches on the back (thx vs normal, 4 vs 8 ohm, etc). I took the cover off and didn't see anything out of line. I'll play with it some more and see if a good night's sleep helped any.
 
Probably need to open it up and do at least a visual inspection to make sure nothing's burnt or bulging/leaking. I'm no expert on it but a quick visual check seems like a prudent course of action.

But based on your description, fiddling around with external switches and connections isn't going to get you anywhere.
 
I had a 2400 on the bench that had the same symptoms; it was due to failing capacitors in the protection circuit. Replacing the capacitors fixed the problem.
 
OK. You've pushed me over the edge. I've been meaning for years to delve inside my electronics. I've got an embarrassing question though. I don't even own a multi-meter. I notice prices vary widely. What do you recommend as a meter that will have all the necessary functions without breaking the bank. Thanks for the suggestions.
 
I went through the same thing looking for a meter awhile back, and here's a thread on affordable multimeters with some good suggestions. The models I researched at that time may not all be available now but it will help you figure out what to look for.

Finally had a chance to hook up the two 2100s to my stratus golds. I'm liking it. I wound up taking the 2400 in to get fixed. I haven't picked it up yet but it ended up costing $115. A little more than I wanted to spend but oh well. I'm doing something a little different. I've got the Golds bi-amped pretty traditionally but the NADs has A/B speakers. On the amp handling the highs and mids I'm running the B speaker runs to the speakers level inputs on my subwoofer. I chose the upper range amp because it is under less strain than the one handling the bass. Would I be better off running two SETS of rca splitters from the preamp? One set to the two amps and the other set to the subwoofer? Is that spreading the low level preamp signal out too much?

$115 doesn't sound too bad to get a quality amp back up and running.
