NAD newbie

Looking for some advice. I'm considering the purchase of a NAD 3140 and NAD 2140 combination. This would possibly replace my Marantz 2225 and link to either 4 KLH model 17's or 4 Dynaco a25XLs. Any thoughts on whether I will love the NAD equipment? Is it reliable (circa approximately 1985). What should I watch for at the audition? Thanks

Now you have me wondering what my 17s and Dynaco A25s would sound like on my NAD? I would suspect that you'll hear some more definition and a bit better imaging and soundstage on the NAD vs. the Marantz. I have a 2265 which is very nice, but the NAD has a bit more musicality with my Polk LSI-7s.

Think you'll like the combo! Not sure about reliability because NAD does skimp on some of its parts to make up costs as it tries to sound like a higher end unit on a budget?

So, I should expect noisy pots. But if the systems work I should love the sound? I like the Dynaco's but was very much impressed when I recapped the (circa 1966) Model 17's

Yeah, you may have to use some DeoxIT. The KLH 17s are really something special, in my opinion! I like the Dynacos to but prefer the 17s, but then again the Dynacos have not been recapped?

That NAD may also need some new caps at that age if it hasn't had some already. You'll notice this if you start to turn up the volume and the 'clipping' light starts flickering and you get some distortion at moderate to even lower volumes--I think that model has one of those?

Enjoy!

The tweeter had ceased working in one pair of 17's I was given. When I recapped them I was so impressed with the sound I did my older set. Great. The 10 driver makes a big difference - otherwise they are very similar to the 25XL's I have not recapped the 25's as they still sound great.

Thanks for the tip on the NAD's I will watch the "clipping" when I go to "see" them.

The 2140 is a very nice power amp. I had one and regret selling it. It was pretty amazing for it's power rating.

Enjoy.
