Well I came across another one. From original elderly owner but no known history. Serial number is 3xxx so a mid to later model one with the newer PCBs. It has issues but hopefully they can be resolved unlike my second one which I could never figure out completely.
The first ZXL I owned was a late model one with SN 42xx and I was able to get it to work perfectly. It was a true glory deck that I wish I did not have to sell a few years back (but that is another story). http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=467549
The second one was SN 21xx and it had the older PCBs. I did the standard OCD repair and Electrolytic replacement along with some solenoids and a few transistors. Never did get it working right and the auto allignment logic just was confused. It was over my head so I sold it to Perry. I'm not sure if he ever got it resolved? http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=539603
Anyway, I could not pass on the deal for this one as it is cosmetically quite good and the transport and heads appear to be in fine shape. Tore into it this morning and it is clear the last person in there worked in the Nakamichi factory (a good thing).
I did the basics on it, clean and lube transport, deoxit all switches and controls. Plugged it in only to find it has similar issue as number two. I was hopeful because it is a higher serial number deck but alas...
Why do we do this to ourselves? Oh well, I have to go read my ZXL notes...
At least it is very clean inside and out...
