Nakamichi BX-300 Idler Tire Problem?

I have a Nakamichi BX-300 that no longer will rewind, fast forward or play. The two take-up rotors just slip so easily. Is this a problem with the Idler Tier? Is that the little tire that hops back and forth between them? Is it what makes them turn?

A) How do I know if the problem is the idler tire or something else?
B) Is the Idler tire easy to replace?

Thanks for any help here. I loved the deck but it's been out of commission for over 5 years.

hi. not sure about 'A'. too many variables. but the i-tire is usually the first thing to go.
here's instructions with photo on how to replace i-tire.

not that hard the first either, really. just go slow.

New idler tires are temporary fixes to the problem. The tire cannot get enough traction against the hard plastic spindles. So.... I came up with a rather drastic solution.

Nakamichi BX-150 idler tire permanent(?) repair

I like my BX-150, but it has the dreaded idler tire. It doesn't matter if I scuff the tire up really well and clean the spindles to perfection, FF and RW are never very strong, and in a year or so the tire is polished smooth and the whole thing is slipping and it's time for yet another idler...

Yeah, but the information is decades old yet unanswered, and it is the first one or two hits on Google. So continuing the thread has merit.
