Nakamichi BX300 Recording Problem

Hi,

Recently I am facing this problem while trying to record in an audio cassette using my Nakamichi BX300 Deck.

While recording the output I am listening to through the monitor option is not actually whats getting recorded. The Monitor audio is much sharper but whats actually getting recorded is dull compared to what I hear.

What can be the possible reasons for this issue?

Check the Bias and Eg settings and what tapes are you using? and have you cleaned and demagntized the
heads lately?

I agree with that assessment. Clean and de-mag the heads and double check the EQ and bias ("Tape Selector") settings. Also, as a long time owner of a Nak BX-300, I'd recommend making sure the Dolby is Off. Those black on black panels and buttons can fool you sometimes.

I don't have a demagnetiser. The heads and pinch rollers are regularly cleaned.Am using bith Normal Bias and Metal tapes but in both cases even after pressing the EX and ZX buttons the recording sound duller than the Monitor sound.

All my DOLBY Buttons are switched off

Have you tried different makes of cassettes? Maybe you've got some old stock there. With my BX300, I always get great results with Maxell XLIIs.

I tried both Normal bias and Metal cassettes but the problem persists.
Tape mode is sounding DULL compared to Source Mode.

Quite possibly the deck is in need of some service. How old is it? Mine is a 1983 model that Nakamichi re-built and re-calibrated after about 12 years of really solid use. It's been excellent ever since although I don't use it nearly as much as I once did. Like everything that's well-designed and properly built, a good once-over every now and then is well worth the expense.

Its of the same era.
Am not able to understand where the fault lies?
Is it to do something with adjustment of record head or adjusting internal bias?

It does have a Bias adjust I just checked see if you can get a Manual for it and
it will tell you where to set it for certain tapes.

The bias IS adjustable, but has a limited range. Decreasing bias boosts the high-end response. I got a reworked BX-300 from a member here, and it works quite well, but you can't stick any tape in it. Your deck was set up for TDK tapes at the factory.

Sounds like typical record and play head mismatched alignment. Azimuth and or head height don't match, plus the likely possibility of bias calibration not matching the specific tape as Wade said, you only have a limited range of bias fine tune and if you are out of that range, it will be duller or too bright. Does the bias fine tune make any difference?

I think your observations are spot on. Bias fine tune thats available doesnt make any significant change.

Can you please tell me whether I personaly can adjust the record and play head mismatch alignment? Or do I need to get it done through a Technician?
