Nakamichi CDP-2A Tray won't open?

I was really excited to come home today, and try out my new to me Nakamichi CDP-2A. I found a seller across the state selling the cd player on Craigslist. The guy was nice enough to ship it to me. The seller, mentioned the unit worked fine, but the sometimes the cd would not read on the 1st or 2nd attempt. I figured it might just be a dirty lens,so I bought the unit.

It wasn't too expensive,so I thought what the hell. However,I received the unit today, and Immediately noticed that the tray won't fully open. I slid a cd into the gap,and the cd played just fine. I read some threads about the trays not opening and correcting the issue by replacing the belt.

Although, before I do that, is it possible that maybe something got of whack while it was being shipped? It looks like the clamp that stabilize the cd won't rise up high enough for the cd tray to open.

Here's a video demonstrating the issue.

Anyone have any advice?

I would meticuluosly clean and re-lube the mechanism's rails (sure to be solidified grease there which should be removed and replaced by a light teflon oil) and replace the belts first. In my experience 90%+ of drawer problems are fixed with a cleaning and belt refresh.

Thanks,I'll give that a try this weekend!

The seller didn't mention any issues with the cd tray,so I'm guessing something may have just got unaligned during shipping.

Hopefully,it's something simple.

Thanks again,

dont suppose it could have a shipping screw still installed ? it could also be some sort of a key rather than a screw .

I need to replace the belt on the CDP-2 as tray is not opening. I can hear motor when button pressed. I can seem to figure out how to remove the tray's 4th screw located front right as its under the tray that will not move out of the way. Any advice? With the top case off, I was able to insert a cd and it works fine. I just picked this up at goodwill cheap and would love to add to my system

not sure on that one but some you need to remove front door by sliding upwards then remove complete cd unit after releasing connectors and fixing screws .
p.s welcome to AK

Since the tray is in and front door is flush with the unit, I could not figure out how to remove the cover and not sure cover comes off. I don't want to break the tray. Thx for the reply. I tried removing the front panel but the tray cover stops it from coming off on that side. I don't see a tray release anywhere

I know that method but I just can’t get to the wheel. If I could remove the door maybe I could. My tray is same shown in the photo in first thread above totally covering everything with one screw from removal. If that door front can be removed I would like to know before I try and break it. Anyone know on this model?

All fixed. I had to grind the one bolt that extended thru bottom of unit then carefully drill out the bolt. Got unit out and put in new belt. Just used a o-ring from Home Depot and worked well. BTY the tray door comes off upward but tray needed to move out first. Replaced that one bolt with a new one with nut underneath. Sounds amazing for $15.
