Nakamichi DR-1 "Err" Won't Eject and Rollers Stuck

I'm working on a Nakamichi DR-1, and as soon as you turn it on you get the "Err" message displayed. Also, the cassette door will not open. When you press eject it feels like it's jammed. I took it apart to replace the belts, that was my initial task, and put it all back together but the door still won't open. I can slide the mechanism manually to open the door, but it's like it's stuck.

I then noticed the pressure rollers were ceased in place (see photos attached). I can't find anything on how this eject mechanism works. I'm assuming all of this is related, but I've never messed with a Nakamichi. Any help is appreciated!

Mode motor is likely stuck. They all fail sooner or later.

It is the small motor with wormwheel. Take out the transport, disconnect it, and apply a battery to the motor's terminals, trying both polarities. It may be that the mechanism disengages. Then service the motor (plenty of threads at tapeheads.net, ).

If this fails you can try to rotate the wormwheel by hand to lower the head bridge. Do not attempt to rotate the control cam wheel: too much force on it will break stuff.


Check the rollers for imprints from the capstans.
