Nakamichi DR-2 keeps stopping on playback

I recently purchased my first Nakamichi tape deck. However, on testing it, it all works fine except it keep stopping on playback. Sometimes after a second, sometimes after 30 or so seconds. The seller has offered me a refund if I want to return it, or a partial refund if I want to keep it and try to repair it. Does anyone know what the issue might be and whether it is a big job to fix please? The more attempts I give it, it seems to work for a bit longer.

It also has the issue that recording doesn't work, like as if the record tab sensor isn't engaging. I paid £230 for it. Is it worth keeping and repairing?? It's in beautiful condition apart from that.

Usually, replacing the belt(s) in cassette units addresses problems similar to the one on your system. You can probably find a youtube or writeup regarding the steps for your DR-2. Try searching here on AK. There are many helpful folks.
Make sure to buy the new belts from a respected seller with good return policy.

My post was deleted. I have no idea why. It has a dead spot reel motor. Common on all Sankyo designed transports regardless of make. Nothing to do with belts. Put it in fast forward with no tape for about 30 minutes and see if you get longer run time. Sometimes that is all it needs, but usually the motor has to be replaced.

I would say longer than 30 minutes. I use 10-20 hours, in sessions of 2 hours or so.

If it cannot reliably play tapes in entirety after that, then the motor needs replacing. At any rate, it is good practice to exercise a Sankyo-based deck weekly. Long idle periods are detrimental.


The DR-2 is absolutely worth repairing, but the purchase price of £230 is far too much for a deck with such obvious defects. Over here it is worth 300 euro in fully restored state.
