Nakamichi Dragon

I don't even know how to operate it yet. I have found a service manual online but not free. The Onkyo pieces sound great. Listening to a Rory Gallagher R2R I recorded on it now. That Yamaha tuner kicks ass too. The only tuner I've found that gets our classical station without hiss!
 
There's a YouTube clip showing some of what it can do. Pretty frickin' sweet. I think that piece may be the sleeper of the bunch - and that's saying something!

I found a couple of videos but they only showed someone listening to it and pushing a few buttons.

Did you find a video on youtube that shows how to use it?

I think you might be right that this is the sleeper in this purchase. I looked at the specs... 116db S/N!!! now that's quiet! :yes:

Well, I dug out the original box hoping the receipt was inside. It was not. I did notice the original UPS shipping label showed it was shipped to my dealer January 1984. I'll keep looking. That little pink receipt is now over 30-years old but I'm still hoping to find it!

I do have the original owner's manual, sales flyer, and product folder, but for some reason the receipt isn't in there. The Dragon has never lived in any other house. That doesn't mean I'll find it before I move! :D

I spent some money on hi-fi equipment in my youth but I would never have spent $2,400 on a cassette deck! Sure I bought my Soundcraftsmen PE2217, B&O Beogram 4002, and Crown D150 new back then and earlier, but I'd remember if I'd spent that kind of cash!

I'm not usually cheap, but this truly is an obsolete item. Not rare, obsolete. I think that most people have moved forward since then. I used to be right into decks and very particular about recording and playback. The thing was that technology moved into the next era of reproduction for the better. I was 15 years late getting into digital, but it had matured by then. No more eaten tapes, no more heads cleaning, no more tracking fuss, no more bandwidth limiting nor high residual noise. That was before I had internet access but it only took two ears to realize how much better digital sounded. Today, I would buy a Nakamichi Dragon for nostalgic reasons and would offer $150-$200 if the mood was right. YMMV
