I have always heard Nakamichi creates awesome cassette decks. I just purchased a Nakamichi MR-2. I have many cassette decks from AKAI, Pioneer and Technics which are nice decks. This is my first Nakamichi tape deck. Is the Nakamichi MR-2 worth my repairing and refurbishing. Is the Nakamichi MR-2 better than my basic AKAI, Pioneer and Technics cassette deck. I'm keeping my Nakamichi MR-2 just because, I like the thing. I hear so much good about Nakamichi MR-2 in both sound and engineering.

I'm just rounding out my collection and I wanted one last very nice cassette deck to go with my Back Sansui AU-D9 \ TU-S9 setup. I come here to ask my questions because, I honestly just don't know. You folks are supposed to be the experts. I'm just an old gray werewolf with tin ears. One thing I can say, it's pretty.

To answer your two questions, yes and yes.

It is a Sankyo transport based deck, and as such, it is susceptible to dead spot reel and mode motors. Lots of info on numerous threads about those two specific motors. If you can do the work yourself, it's definitely worth it. To have a pro do it, it's probably going to cost more than the deck is worth. The basics are to replace the counter belt and idler tire (most likely has one but a small chance it is gear drive idler), clean the switches and pots, and replace the REC/PLAY relay. Unless you want it calibrated, that should get you going and should be pretty good.
