Howdy, all.....not sure if this Nak is "vintage" enuff....the top sure looks the part........pix below....I hope........

I found this little (bitty) gem Friday, 05 28 10 at a Value Village near me.........stuck it under my shirt and RAN........not really, I paid for it, but............(look at the pix)

Plugged it in, checked it out and....IT LIVES........now listening to KUHF 88.7 FM .......U of H....classical....Brahms string quartet, on now....... NO ANTENNA!!!....clear as a , well, bell!

It is ,to be succinct, Frickin' Awesome!!!!!

I really wanted a small unit, like this, for my computer table....when I get ambitious, I will drag out my Minimus 7W's, and go full blast.......now using my Panasonic H/P's .....lovely sound..........

I Googled this unit, didn't get much.....a guy in the Northeast was recently selling one, said it was 80 WPC....yeah, right.........can't find much info, anyone know anywhat?????

More to come on this late breaking story....stay tuned (har,har)........willhowl:thmbsp:

That seller who said it's 80 wpc also posted a picture that shows its total power consumption is rated 75w. So that would mean it's creating its own power. OK...maybe not. Realistically, it's probably in the neighborhood of 15 wpc.

That Nak also had a matching cd/cassette player, model CP-1 to go with it.

Interesting little unit. Nakamichi made some good-sounding gear. Definitely try some better speakers with it, and while you're at it, try some good headphones. :music: That'll help you get an even better idea of what the unit is capable of.

It's always nice to find something small but good-sounding for a computer/workplace system. Congratulations on finding something small but good-sounding! :thmbsp:

I bought the whole stack of those components recently for about $20, and sent them on to live with a friend. They were OK, not Nak's best obviously, but served a space-conserving purpose. The OEM speakers pretty much sucked.

I have this unit in my shop and even with the stock speakers it can rock pretty load and clean.

EW

Maybe the speakers I had lived a tough life before I got them...they sounded like thumping on wet cardboard boxes once the volume turned up a little.

R1 + Minimus7 = eehhhhh....

First off, thanks for all comments......I got ambitious this morning, and hooked up a pair of Minimus 7 I had laying around.....I also have Min 7W, but one of them was hiding from me, so I went the easy route.......later model(?) white 7's..........

Results were .....disappointing!...........sounded OK, but nuttin' special.......My Panasonic H/P (EAH-T40) still sound very nice with this unit........very Sennheiser HD-404(?) type of clarity, with nice low-end........

I then tried running a line from the H/P output jack to the JBL Media 3 powered speaks....(pictured above)...and they provided ( with level balancing) a MUCH better result......

FM Stereo was the source......WITH antenna, this time.....

Bottom line...I'm still very happy with this find, I needed a good Headphone amp at this workstation.....I got my full size rig about 10 feet away, anyway.....Tiny Apartment situation......

This is only the second Nak unit I've had that was actually functional... I've found many duds......for free, or cheap, no biggie.......part of the vintage game.......

AND........it looks really cool...............willhowl:smoke:

I used to drive a pair of Polk SDA-2's with one of the little R-1's. Because of the living situation at the time high volume was out of the question. It actually sounded good.

I think I'll get it out and see how it sounds now.

I picked up one of these last week for a pittance and just hooked it up in the bedroom. So far it looks to be the keeper as it pulls in my stations more cleanly than the Pioneer SX-828 and sounds fine at the lower levels I play at the night. It drives the ADS L300 speakers fine, and it's small footprint is welcome too.

Nice little unit!

A couple of weeks ago I also brought one for home for next to nothing. I'm also impressed with the tuner section on this little wonder. I'm running mine with a pair of ads 200's and this tiny set up sounds way better than it's small size indicates.

Hi all, I know this is an old thread so there's probably no one to read this.
I bought my R1 bookshelf unit new about 25 years ago, and have never been tempted to upgrade. I noticed some snark about the speakers in earlier comments. My own experience has been that people are always amazed at the sounds that come out of these little wonders. They finally after all these years need professional attention, and I am more than glad to pay it for the joy they have provided over the years.
The receiver needed warranty work shortly after I purchased it (resoldering), but has worked like a champ ever since. I don't care how much it's worth because it will always have a home with me.

My r1 has been running a pair of peavey sp3's 24-7 for about a month now. I won't even mention the other vintage gear it's beat out for this position. It's main job was to make these nasty sounding pro venue speakers listenable and it's done that and more. The tuner section of this little wonder continues to amaze me as well. If Nak can squeeze this much quality into a lower tier unit it makes me wonder what their better gear must be capable of.

I was hoping one of you could tell me what type of connector handles the remote-control link between the RS-1 receiver and the CP-1 combination player? On a limited budget a long time ago, I bought only the receiver and speakers. I just bought the CD player on line, and it works fine, but the remote control doesn't affect the CD player when I connected the units with 1/8 inch stereo phone plugs. I'm hoping that it is the wrong plugs, not a problem with the unit.
Thanks!

So they're both Nakamichi units, yes? Do you have to actually press the function keys on the remote [CD / Tape / Rec /ECT] before pushing the keys for the component commands? IE, you would have to press CD then Play, and if you wanted to change the volume, you would have to press Reciever then Volume Up/Dn.

Is the remote actually transmitting? It works the reciever? If not, hold it near an AM radio and push a button and listen for the chirp.

It may be a Tip Sleeve (mono, two conductor) plug that is used to connect them, and a Tip Ring Sleeve (stereo, three conductor plug) isn't making the right connections.

Rod,

Thanks for the reply--I don't know how I missed seeing this sooner, but your idea is a good one. I think I'll buy the mono plugs plus cable on the way home tonight (there are still a couple of Radio Shacks still open here), and see if it works. I took another look last night with the case off. Unfortunately, the socket is a chassis-mount plastic box that pretty effectively hides the identity. Looking in the hole with a light isn't much help, there is metal in there, but it is hard to see. I'll let you now if it works.
Chris
