Nakamichi receiver auto tuning issue

I have run into an odd problem with a Nakamichi AV-7 receiver that has me baffled. When in the manual tuning mode, all works great. But there is no output at all when in auto tuning mode - even when tuned to a station that comes in clear and strong in manual mode. The tuner will settle on stations when in auto mode - so not the classic problem of scanning up or down continuously - just no output. Any suggestions greatly appreciated!
