Nakamichi stasis system speaker recommendsations?

I have a Nakamichi series 7 “system” from 1990. I want to upgrade my speakers and spend around $1000 for the pair. This system is for my adult son so mostly high quality rock Steely Dan to nirvana on vinyl.

Any recommendations on a good sounding
Pair of speakers?? The system has a PA 7 200 watt per channel power amp

The Nak PA-7 is a suburb and powerful amp, and can drive literally any speakers, including low impedance/power hungry ones. You can choose ones you like at will.

Speaker preferences vary widely an are highly personal, so I will not make a recommendation beyond that if you are buying new, you should audition as many as practical before you buy. If buying used and local, at least you can, and should, audition before you buy. If you find something you are interested in and want to know if they are priced appropriately, you can ask about them in Dollars and Cents and are likely to get quick responses there.

In the used market, that's about 80 percent of all speakers ever - so lots to chose from. As northpaw said, there are as many opinions as there are, well, you know ... so the right thing to do is to audition as many as you can. Also keep in mind, what you may like your son may not like.

Cerwin Vegas and JBLs are really good for classic rock - and rockin' it loud, but they may not play well with that Nak amp ... and you (he) may not like the sound. Speakers and amps all interact differently - some combos are good, others really bad. Best thing to do is to listen to what grabs your attention, or comes your way.
 
I have an unused PA-7 myself--wonderful Nelson Pass design, and bulletproof. Kind of like a budget Threshold--the circuitry in the PA-7 and the Threshold S/ series of the time is remarkably similar, as is the interior layout. I've heard the Nak CA-7A preamp is quite good as well.

I can't really recommend a speaker though--so many choices. The PA-7 drove my Vandersteens quite well, but I don't think of them as a "rock" speaker--they do take some work to make them "sing" properly as well. Given the high quality of the amp, I'd avoid many of the choices that many might recommend here, but I would definitely look at used speakers, maybe see what's on US Audio Mart or Audiogon within that price range. That amp deserves something way better than mass market systems, IMHO...
 
New England Sound is my vote. AR-90s are my choice to run with my Thresholds. Gotta love high current amps.
