NAKAMICHI TX-1000 Computing/Centering TURNTABLE???

I inquired about it, and got a response from the seller. He claimed to be in Hawaii on his honeymoon, and assured me that a third party service (ISoldIt) was handling the sale. Offered me a discount of $1900, and a 10 day full refund if I didn't like it.

Never got down to specifics on payment and pickup, but said they would be the standard ISoldIt terms so it could have been real. He did say that ISoldIt would handle the shipping, which I found a bit weird for CraigsList. Personally, I would NEVER buy something like this without being able to play before I purchased.

Yes, that is exactly the response I got from the SME 20/II turntable ad I inquired about. It is pure scam. You wind up getting a fake email from ISoIdit asking you to Western Union the money directly to some dude in Atlanta. It made specific mention to NOT send the money to ISoldit. It's probably getting harder to scam on Ebay these days so they'e all moving to Craiglist.

Scott,

I should have also stated ONLY if I could pick up, hence my statement had it been closer.

As Sgt Esterhaus, would advise to all - " Hey, let's be careful out there!" I know most are experienced in the ways of these scammers but one can never be too careful. If it sounds too good to be true, in most cases, it is.

All the comments about the possiblity of this particular sale being fishy seem prudent. But that's a separate issue of whether the turntable is a good one, and worth the asking price (if it is in fact a real ad).
I wonder why the centering device is being described by people as a gimick. Have they heard a turntable with such a device? I imagine no one argues that warps are inaudible and have no effect on the cartridge/arm behavior. Given the fact that a severe warp will throw the arm up in the air, and even small warps can make woofers move visibly, (and that's not even talking about bad combos of arm mass and cartridge compliance) it would take a pretty blinkered view of what matters and what doesn't to make this claim.
Well, an eccentric record is essentially a warp in the horizontal plane, and is going to have the same effect. Not too many records are grossly eccentric, but some are. And most records are slightly eccentric -- if you look carefully at the arm, its very often moving slightly right and left. Does a very small back and forth matter? Its not obvious to me that it doesn't, and the problem is unless you have a centering device like this, how can you tell -- there is no standard of comparison.

My use of the word 'gimmick' was only intended for those who may view the entire turntable as such.
I was trying to draw attention to the point that this turntable has a reputation of being a very good sounding turntable, irrespective of the other features.
Given all the input about the similar listings, this item would only be worth considering if you could view it before handing over any money.

The listing you refer to is DEFINITELY 100% SCAM. They copied MY photos off of eBay from a TX-1000 that I listed and sold -and made this fake listing on Craigslist. The SAME (my) photos were also stolen online and used in a fake AUSTRALIAN eBay listing. Infuriating! One of these actually grabbed most of his info from my listing as well. BEWARE of any listing ANYWHERE that has my painting in the background. NOBODY else has that painting. Idiots. Meanwhile; as to the 2 tone-arms + SEPARATE centering arm: The TX-1000 is built to hold 2 separate tone-arms for different cartridges (MONO vs STEREO / other sound/channel considerations. As you will have seen; the (my) TX-1000 had only ONE tone-arm mounted. The CENTERING ARM is completely separate and is RECESSED (not visible unless in use or with the cover removed) in a special compartment. My original listing showed all of that in the many photos. I joined AUDIOKARMA specifically to address this scam that has been perpetrated (how many times?!) based on my original true listing on eBay at the end of October 07. I will check back here now and again to see if anybody posts replies w/ query. REMEMBER: any PHOTO showing the PAINTING in background... OR swirly warm colors on the highly reflective platter (reflection OF the painting) are from MY (already long-gone) TX-1000. Don't send ANY money to people using it.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for once again confirming that it was a scam. Nothing like driving it home in case someone missed the other posts stating an reiterating. Sorry to hear that you've been exploited to some degree.

What's the purpose of having 2 tonearms? I always wanted ot ask that.

Two arms allows you to:

1) Compare two tonearms, using the same cartridge

2) Compare two cartridges, using the same tonearms.

The TX-1000 in that link has two SME arms, one for sure is a 3012. :tresbon:

Edit: they both are SME, a 3012 and the other is one of the newer models. The second picture is the mounting frame for the two arms. Neither arm does anything other than play the record, by the way. No "positioning" operations are done by either SME.

If it had been real , it would be an outstanding TT. At the end of Nak's ascendancy , when they made the ZX9 and Dragon cassette decks , it was their pride and joy. I heard one at Imperial Sound in Tulsa around '82 or '83. Auditioned it with the ADS speakers I bought , and it sounded very good.
