Nakamichi TX-1000 Turntable

I have an opportunity to trade/buy for a Nakamichi TX-1000 turntable. I know very little about this piece and hoping those of you with more knowledge may chime in.

It comes without an arm and not sure if there were specific arms required and if so, are the obtainable? Also, what type of price would/should I pay to get it. Doubt there is much on the auction sites although I will look and on some of the other sale sites but would appreciate any counsel the forum can provide.

Wow! I just started some research and saw that too.

he also has two Dragons, a Marantz 2500, Sansu TU-919 tuneri and a bunch of other stuff. The local McIntosh dealer told him to call me as he was looking for a 7270. As we spoke, he started rattling all of these fine pieces off and asked me to come by on Saturday.

Just thought it best to gather some info before I go drool!
 
The Dragon has a auto centering mechanism that automaticly makes sure the record is perfectly centered, Quite a piece of audio history and fine sounding I've heard.

There is some bad info on the web. I'm pretty certain that it did not retail for $7k originally. I remember a new unit back then, and it was more like $2500 new. Still not inexpensive, and it is clearly desirable.

If you decide to decline on the deal, I'm sure that many around here (including myself) would be interested...
 
I won't decline on the deal unless he is unrealistic in his expectations. A 25 year old TT with computerized parts that has not been used may have its own inherent issues so it may take someone like yourself to be able to get it up and running to spec.

As for the price, I have seen it mentioned a few times from different articles including a NY Times article from 1982. I was shocked as I could not believe anything would have cost that much. $2,500 would seem to be a more reasonable cost.

BTW, I will not be keeping it if I get it as I just don't need any additional COLLECTIBLES sitting around.

The "Dragon CT" was a different Nak turntable.
Considering how rare the Nak turntables are,I'd be inclined to consider the deal,were I in your position.
Are you able to see/hear the TT before you buy?That may be the most crucial consideration;confirmation of the actual condition of the piece.
Of course you could believe the myth perpetuated out there,that you already own the "World's Best Turntable".

What have you got to lose by checking it out?You might just be able to tell us just how it compares to "The Grand Pooh-bah".

I will check it out Saturday. I just didn't know the value as he wants to do some horse trading. I know he never used it as he told me he never purchased a tonearm. He was in the military and purchased from another member of the armed services amny years ago in europe. That is all I know at the moment but if the price is anywhe near right, I will have it Saturday. He wants my McIntosh MX-135 and now is also interested in a pair of 501's. Of course, he will be paying a nice sum for those if he moves forward but I can knock a "little" off the price in exchange for the table:deal:

His expectations are not real high for it as he has no use at this time and was surprised that I was actually interested in it I believe.

It just looks interesting and would love to check it out.

Any recommendations for an arm to go with it? I can't find much info on what folks are using and have no idea what may have been recommended.

Be very careful! although this 'table is a piece of audio history, so is Nakamichi and the availability of spare parts. As a collectible it is OK, however as a turntable there are many good current tables that will have support and sound better. VPI comes to mind.

Nothing I dislike more is buying an expensive piece and having no spare part availability. Barry, you could end up with an very expensive doorstop.

In ehoove's pic it looks like the one arm is the long-wand version of the SME 3009. Can't make out the other as it is so dark. The best arm I've used is the SME 309, and it is wonderful. Can't imagine you could go wrong with any of the modern, high quality arms from SME, Rega, Graham, Clearaudio, etc. Get whatever looks the best to you. They are all very well engineered and built. To pick one over the other is simply splitting hairs. You might want to look at a high-end phono preamp, as well. McIntosh has never been noted for putting particularly good ones in their preamps. Actually, with a Scoutmaster and a Linn am rather surprised you don't have one (I know, I know....where is mine - on order to be delivered in July http://www.raysamuelsaudio.com/index2.html). What cartridges are you using?

Just sold my SME 3009 on a Thorens TD-124 and the LINN is up for sale. I have the VPI arm on the Scoutmaster. I just wasn't sure if there was a "special" arm/arms that were recommended with the NAK.
