Name That Tune for Free Tape July 13th

Ok. So its Friday the 13th (Well still the 12th as I post this in my time zone, but for most of you its after midnight). Hopefully people will be lucky on this one. I decided to try out a contest while Des Lab takes a break for the summer. While doing this I picked pretty mainstream songs, but I'm also concerned I made it almost too easy. We'll see how quickly people get these (if they do). I don't have a huge collection of blank tapes to give away (I don't even have much reel to reel), so what I am giving away is 1 Denon HD-M 90 tape with 1 Maxell XL-IIS 90 tape. I hope you are still users of cassettes. I haven't tested either tapes (since I bought them online), so Im assuming they will work. Both are sealed. Anyway this contest is for 24 hours after which if no one wins, it will be null and void. Same rules as before. I appologize for the audio quality as its from a digicam and not a video camera. PM me with your answers if you think you have all 7. For others try not to post below what you think the songs may be till after the contest is over. Here is a chance for Des Lab to also win some tape as well, so Im returning the favor. If people find this round too easy, I will endeavor to find more obscure music next time. Good idea Brax! Glad to see someone else take the idea. Unfortunately, I only know song #7. I think I've heard #5 before but don't know it. I thought I had pretty wide and eclectic tastes in music. But most of these stumped me. If these are indeed recent 'mainstream' songs, then that would explain it: I haven't listened to mainstream or Top 40 since the mid 90's. And even then, I didn't like most of what I heard, hence why I stopped listening altogether. Now I seldom listen to ANY radio at all. Because even the few stations that do play the "classics" that I like tend to regurgitate the same limited number of songs over and over and over with relatively little variety. So-called "Oldies" format is probably the worst offender here. "Classic Rock" stations are not far behind. And those 10 minute commercial breaks filled with obnoxious car and Taco Bell ads just reinforce the notion to turn off the radio.

Let me pass on a piece of advice that was passed on to me the first time I ran one of these: the majority of your audience here is of the 'older' crowd. As a whole, we are not familiar with much (if any) of the music that todays 21 and under crowd listens to. If you want to garner wider participation, try and include more stuff geared towards our generation and the one before us-60's, 70's, and 80's era music. Nothing wrong with a current one or two just for variety (or as a stumper song). But if you focus your efforts more on the likes of The Beatles, The Stones, Fleetwood Mac, John Cougar Mellencamp, The Moody Blues, Pink Floyd, and others of that ilk, you are likely to capture more attention.

Thanks for doing it! Maybe if this one ends w/o a winner, you can do another one soon. Or maybe I will. Heck, maybe we can run one at the same time!

To be honest only one song is current and is probably still on the radio. As for the others many are from the 80s and one from the 70s, plus one from the 60s (or is it 50s?).

Ok (oops) maybe I made it too hard over too easy. Sorry about that guys. I guess its a beginners learning stage. But many of these songs have been heard either on the radio or in movies. I'll post the names by 11PM tonight. Would it help if I posted longer versions of the songs in question? And I will be honest- one song is from a Canadian group, so I may of been putting an unfair disadvantage on this contest. And the first song there is a good chance no one from our generation would even listen to it, but I thought maybe they may of heard it on the radio. Next time I'll do better with the audience that is here.

Next time I'll go for older music to be fair. But I'll leave this one up to see what people come up with. I did notice people gave up in the middle of the videos, so I guess that is an indication I made this too hard. And my understanding of mainstream may be a bit off. These were popular groups back in the day, but the music you may or may not of heard.

Yes Des- we could have dual contests. Free tapes for everyone! As for a tally- so far people have said they know song #2, 3, possibly #5, and #7. Well thats better then zero.

Would it throw people off to also do movie soundtracks- like in the classical music sense, or should I just stick to pop/ rock? And for the videos Im going to have to look into getting a AVI to MPEG converter. I downloaded a trial version to do these, but my conversions are almost up. I 'll have to see what I can find.
 
When you say that people gave up in the middle of the videos, do you mean they didn't play them all the way through, or they didn't listen to all the songs? And how would you know that? :scratch2:
 
The only one I know is no.2 (I have the LP). On the rest, I don't have a clue.

They watched the first few or so videos, but the viewings progressively got smaller near the end of the batch. The last ones have a third less viewings as the first. I'll post those numbers tonight.
 
Just two comments I'd like to add. First, why did you remove the head housing cover when filming? Was this to show a slightly better view of the "reels" turning? Second, I noticed that your record levels were a bit on the low side. You can push them up a bit and get better sound. Just don't go too far into the red. And by the way, what kind of tape is that? Judging from the red inner hub clamps, I'm betting it's an older model TDK such as a 1982 AD, SA, or MA.

I removed the housing to see the tape and capstans better. The head housing shell has a very tiny window, so you can't see much of the tape. Decides after your reel to reel looking impressive as it is, I had to keep up on that one. :)
I'd throw in some glowing tubes into the shot if it helped the appearance, since cassette decks are pretty static other then the very small turning reels and moving meters. Its all for show. We learned in college on how to make shots more interesting then they normally are. Removing the shell did this a bit.

As for the levels some were low yes. They were recorded on the fly (and were in more quiet portions of the song on a few of them) since many of these songs are dispursed over many tapes of which I didn't have a lot of time to record this video. The sun was going down, as was the light. And I wanted to get this up before midnight. It took me 2 hours to upload these 7 videos, so that took a lot of time. You'll notice its the same tape progressively throughout. If I get more time next time I may use the originals. They are packed in racks on my shelf and are hard to get to to remove the cassettes (they are stacked on top of each other). And on my deck the levels are lower for peaks then say my Aiwa which is higher. I usually take more care doing recordings I keep, but this was a tape on the fly I needed to use and I knew the microphone being used would not pick up very well the quality of the recording. I found out the tape has dropouts which is good to know, since I was planning on using it for important mix tapes. As for the sound- realistically it wouldn't of made any difference with the mike the camera had. I've decided after many years of not having one, I'm getting a new HDV video camera. Its on order.

And the tape was as you guessed it a mid 80s TDK HX-S 60.

Well its almost 10 oclock here, which isn't far from the deadline. I believe everyone has already gone to bed, so I might as well list off the songs since it seems that all who have participated have done so already. So here we go:

Song 1: If anyone here has even remotely heard of who the runner ups and winners of American Idol, may recognize this lady. The song was "Over It" by Katharine McPhee. She released an album earlier this year. They have been promoting her heavily on Yahoo I've noticed.

Song 2: Anyone who loves the movie "Beetlejuice" would recognize this song. They used it in the end of the film. Its "Jump In the Line" by Harry Belafonte. Either from the 50s or 60s. Someone on here may have that answer.

Song 3: 70s fans may recognize this tune as its "Bron-Y-Aur Stomp" from the Led Zeppelin 3 album.

Song 4: Another movie song- this one from Risky Business when he takes his parent's Porsche out for a first drive. The song- "The Pump" by Jeff Beck. Can't say if its late 70s or 80s, but the film was out in the mid 80s- so I assume its from then.

Song 5: A tune used in a few movies now and then and from the same group that did the song "Oh Yah" in Ferris Bueller's Day Off. The group is 'Yello' and the song is "The Race". 80s tune.

Song 6. Now to an unfair entry since this was from a Canadian band, but I have no clue how much exposure this band got south of the border. The song-"Save This House" by Spirit Of the West. Early 90s tune I believe.

Song 7. From the original version of the band INXS- Song "Suicide Blonde". Early 90s tune.

Now for the numbers: Song 1: 32 hits (not counting my hits)
Song 2: 27 hits.
Song 3: 23 hits.
Song 4. 22 hits.
Song 5: 20 hits.
Song 6: 16 hits.
Song 7: 19 hits.

Let me know if others are interesting in doing another one of these soon. I'll leave the videos up for a very short while so people can take a second look.
 
As Yogi Bear would say, "Sheesh Boo-boo..." The only one I knew was #7, although I think I recall hearing #2 in an elevator once... :D
 
Well, that explains it. I don't watch movies or American Idol, not familiar with much music past '90, and only know one song by Led Zeppelin. Other than that I think I would have done well. :D I actually do know of some obscure 70s pop from Canada, but I doubt you'd be familiar with it. Anyway, don't mind me, I'm just ribbing you. Keep the contests coming and put in the music that you want. I'm always up for a challenge and look forward to hearing new stuff. Seeing the diminishing hits on the videos though, it's bizarre that people just give up so easily.
 
The videos have now been erased, so be ready for next time. Not sure when it will happen, as not only has my trial version of the AVI to MPeg converter almost run out, but now Microsoft felt the need to delete the codec in my computer for me being able to play back MPeg files (like DVDs) on my Media Player. It was working up until I downloaded an update and after that- no more viewing. Its supposedely because I have the low version of Vista and you need to pay to be able to view DVDs. To get the codec needed, I now have to pay $15 to buy the upload. Thanks Microsoft! Sheesh.
 
I think the reason why the first videos had more hits then the last few is because, if you didn't know any of the first few people would give up and not view the last few. I know I did this myself, the first time I listened to the first three. I went back later on and listened to all of them again. :yes:
 
Makes sense which is what I guessed as well. Since Im on 4 days off from work (the way the days off worked for a two week period), I did up a second contest. I won't be able to do another for a least a while after this one, so I figured I might as well do it now. The new one is Movie soundtrack themes. So if you don't know movies very well, you probably won't get any on this new one either. This one has a bias to science or science fiction films from late 70s to mid 80s. The time after this new one I'll go back to music again. Im uploading the videos now (very slow), so it will be up in a couple hours.
