Need a guy/place that can fix a WM-D6C ASAP!

RUNNING WILD!!!!!
My roommate did something stupid and he just semi-runied a WM-D6C that I just got in the mail today. He decided to take a plug a cable in the WM-D6C and just boom, it was smoking when he plug it in. It will still play but the sound is ****ed more or less (really distorted). He thinks it's the transistors but I think it would be much worse. When I read what he was plugging it in he was plugging a DC 12 cable in this WM-D6C which only use DC 6. When it is running on battery power you can hear something moving inside. He's lucky that I won't ring his neck. Now I don't even know if the PCB is repairable or not. Can anyone who know to repair a WM-D6C can send me to the right direction?

Good luck, I have one of these and I had to send mine into Sony for service back in the 80s. It worked for a while, but motor speed control started to fail. I put it on the shelf I think it still sits there today. I may be willing to help you out with parts, as I think mine still gives good clean audio, I will have to check and see if I have it still and get back to you.

What IS it with "roommates" and touching other people's stuff?

Good luck with that. I could probably fix it, but I'm pretty backed up.

UPDATE!!!

Good news now the thing decided to work again. The main unit itself is working just fine with noting wrong with it but when any battery is in there's a weird humming/grounding noise in the unit. It doesn't look like anything is moving inside but something weird noise is going on in the unit. When a tape is playing the noise is gone.

From looking at the service manual me and my friend who can read service manuals can conclude that the auto-on/off curcuit is gone (most likely why I see smoke in the unit). If I really want to make sure the unit is completely off I just need to remove the battery and that's it.

Now the good news is that it is still working just fine, but just something minor inside of it got kapoop. I still would like to have someone open it up in the future and try to get it fixed.

Now I need to find the link from a guy who has the same problem as me.

And to add even more stuff I talked to nakdoc and he thought the problem was weird. Unit working but making a weird humming noise, odd.

I looked at the schematic and the motor drive transistor does remain powered when the deck is in stop, so that transistor is eather leaky or the motor contol circuit has a problem. A leaky transistor may cause the motor to vibrate but not turn.

That could explain it nak. Would it be a good idea to get it fixed ASAP or it is ok to leave it alone for now? I'm going to use it to see if anymore problems arises.

Ring his neck anyway, I would. I prize WmD6c more than mosy of my other components. Jim
