Need a stereo power amp. but...

Some very very nice suggestions here, thank you. Any current production models available?

Hello bastek,

It all depends on your budget, as there are a few 2 channel amplifiers that could meet your requirements. One option is by AudioSource who is now owned by an investment group out of Oregon called PHX AP Acquisitions. A few years ago, they purchased Phoenix Gold International, which had the AudioSource, Phoenix Gold, and Carver brands. The combined company is now called Rodin.

The AudioSource Amplifier I am thinking of is the AMP310. It is only rated at 2 x 150 Watts into 8 Ω, 2 x 225 Watts into 4 Ω, but can be bridged to 450 Watts into 8 Ω. The output power is provide by Dual-differential Amplifiers with Triple-Darlington Output Stages. :thmbsp:

On the Front

No Power Meter, but do have single Left & Right Signal/Clip LED’s
A/B Speaker Selection
Balance/Volume Trim Control
No Headphone Jack

On the Rear

Input Level Controls
Stereo/Bridge Selection Control
Side Lens Display Control
Time Delay

It does not quite meet your power requirement and it does not have a dedicated Power Meter to view. The LED side lenses illuminate red and the Signal/Clip LED green on active signal and on standby, the side lenses do not illuminate, but the Signal/Clip LED do illuminate in orange.

They retail for $699.99, but can be found online in the $350.00+ range. They also have a decent warranty period good for 2 years.

Like I had mentioned earlier, there are a few more options, it just depends on what your budget is.

Regards,
TB

Hello chasaboo,

No problem as that is what is great about these forums.

I will say that they are exceptional amps and sound great. They have no problem driving most any speaker, and can handle my Martin Logan Clarity low impedance dips with ease. In fact, I have never even come close to pushing either of these amps to the max, as the BX-3MkII has dynamic peaks of 600 Watts at 8 Ω and 900 at 4 Ω. It uses 4 separate power supplies, toroidal power transformer and (16) 150 Watt high-power transistors in a push-pull configuration to deliver a power potential of 2.4kW!

Hello MOPAR3,

Yep, these are great for that type of application, and easily configured with the flick of a switch on the rear panel.

They are somewhat rare to come by, as those of us who have had the pleasure of using them have tended to hold on to them. They do however show up on the common selling venues. Watch for them and you will see them pop up on occasion.

Regards,
TB

TB,

Thanks for posting the pics and info about the DBX BX-3 MKII. After reading this post a while back, I had to try one out. Man, everything said about this amp and more is true. Totally quiet and more power than one know what to do with. I've had the amp peak at 200 watts per channel and it was barely starting to warm up. The fan eventually came on at its lowest setting. The clarity, detail, and quietness it delivers at low volume leaves one stunned. The array of output transistors is impressive too. Thanks for the heads up, I am enjoying it with its CX-3 preamp mate.
I am finishing the wood sides for it as it was rack mounted and will eventually post some pics.

Here are the specifications for the DBX BX-3 MKII:

Onkyo Grand Integra M508. You can thank me later when you hear it.

This is the best picture I could find. Maybe I'll take a photo of mine...

this, to me, is the sexiest beast of all these uncommonly beautiful amps..perhaps because I've heard it, and know how amazing it is....

The GAS Ampzilla II would meet your requirements I believe: 200wpc into 8 channels, with big analog meters and a headphone jack.

Here is a pic of the DBX BX-3 MKII, I posted the specs in an earlier post, but for starters, dynamic output available at 8 ohms: 600 watts per channel :thmbsp:

Interesting, never knew Bose made some real descrete audio component's, just thought it was all molded plastic pre-packaged stuff. Don't think headphone duty really lies with the power amp, and can't recall 1/4" front panel jack's on any of them. If you want headphone juice, several Dynaco pre-amps interfaced directly to the power amp's speaker switching and can give all you want.

Agree with kneeOhFight. The Onkyo Amps in this line are very nice. Distortion levels are extremely low and power grosely underrated. Couldn't go wrong here plus they are awesome looking beasts!

2x 300W @ 8 or 4 ohm (auto impedance detecting, Multi Tap Xfmrs)

theyre heavy though... 39kg (86lb)

Vintage The Best Classe ever made

For me here is the best Classe vintage amplifier ever made the DR3-VHC the letters stood for Very High Current i owned one from 1988 to 2000 with 5 different models of Acoustats this was only 45 watts per channel of pure class A power but it could drive ANY speaker at reasonable volumes take a look at this beauty from Mr. Dave Reich of Quebec Canada now the brains behind Theta Digital.

200wpc seems to be too high to me and would exclude some fine gear
When you get something with a meter you will see that you rarely go above 10 watts
Listening to internet radio now through a kenny KR-5600 (I am the orig owner) with 40 wpc through some ads speakers and never get above 4 or 5 on the volume and at 7 it will shake the whole building
I have a Kenwood 10000 III at home with 120 wpc and it could make your ears bleed
Personally I wouldnt want an amp with headphone jack purely from an engineering standpoint
Thats what pre amps are for
Now a nice integrated.............

This discussion is all from long ago, and very nice to see people's AD and dbx amps holding up. Interesting though no one mentions or indeed knows about the dbx BX1, a kilowatt fanless monster that will dissipate like 19A into a short. Anyone who likes easeful unstrained power and complete load invariance should check it out. If you can find one.

You realize those speaker selector switches can easily compromise your amplifiers. And then become intermittent in the future if not cycled regularly. Then they just may wear out any way.
