Need a Wharfedale expert!

Hey AK,

I've got a line to pick up some Wharfedales and these are speakers I know absolutely nothing about, except I do know they came in a few different versions.

The two I'm looking at are the Wharfedale W60's, and these I'm fairly certain are just the W60, not W60D or W60C. Then the other one is a Wharfedale W70, no idea what version this one is.

If someone could help point out to me what to look for that would be most appreciated.

W60's from the late 50's are a two way ported system. They came with a solid large magnet tweeter w/a felt surround, and respectable 12" woofer, cloth surrounds. Listen to them off of the floor, great for classical and jazz, folk and esquivel! 35watts is enough to get them to sing. Value, depending on condition of course, varies between 50.00 per pair to 150.00. W70's are the three way system, some come with floor stands - yes, they are better lifted off the floor a bit. Depending on the age, you get a felt surround tweeter, cloth surround 3-4" mid range, 12" woofer. Early versions have fixed grilles, but are very influenced by danish modern furniture design, and are ported also. Same wattage to get them to sing as the W60's. With a tube amplifier, they are downright lovely in the lower ranges. Similar musical styles work with them. they are also great for smaller rooms. Values, can be 35.00 a pair to 350.00! depending on condition. Good luck, they are worth the effort. Spare parts are relatively available on epay. Do Not Crank Metal through these - they just aren't built for it.
