Need advice on which sansui amp to buy

I have a pair of Sansui SP 2500x and Sansui SP 5500x speakers that need the perfect amp. I have the TU 9500 tuner and have a chance to buy the AU 999 or the AU 8500. What would be the best match for these speakers? I also have the SPX 8900's and the SPX 6000's. The AU 999 is $460 in MINT CONDITION and the AU 8500 is $500 in good condition.

If you have to choose between 999 or 8500, I would choose 999.
BUT, I would suggest a AU-919. or even better a AU-X1.

1987 AU-X701 'Vintage'

Or...1987 AU-X901 'Vintage'.

Both are international alphas.

Why not definition series?

BA-2000/CA-2000
BA-3000/CA-3000
BA-5000/CA-3000

or AU-20000
AU-10000

Plus one on the definition series. I find them great to listen to, and rock solid in the build quality department. Plus, ya gotta love the looks, and they give you the incentive to go out and get a TU-9900 tuner. Then, you sit back with a glass of great red wine, and wonder what to buy next.

I don't always weigh in on the "this vs that" debates, but on this one I will happily vouch for the AU 999. Particularly restored, a helluva musical amp. I love mine.

Im with mmann68 on the "which is better" advice, they are all good! i do agree on the 999 though, very nice sounding amp. Another route to take if you want a receiver is the single digit series I have a Seven and it has a different sound than the 999 but again very nice and east to listen to. It seems as though the early seventies stuff is has a more analog sound if thats a good description, at least in my experience. I am also kinda partial to the "triple tone control" models, you just have that much more control for your listening pleasure! My experience only YMMV. Good luck with your search, lots of excellent choices out there! Happy listening.

Seconded: I have a BA/CA-2000 set with a TU9900 & SR838, this will stay with me until I'm in an urn :D.

I just got a QRX-8001 going and it sounds great. '70s era Sansuis sound really good.

The only way to answer a which is best question is to get both and decide for yourself. Then sell of the one you like least.

Totally agree LBPete, way too many variables! It is nice to have a good starting point though when getting started into this vintage game! Lots of good advice, but once again your set-up and your ears will tell you. I have found out in just the short time I have been into the vintage gear, all the advice on "which is better" can become a bit overwhelming, so I just bought a piece of gear and went from there. Good luck and happy listening!

My only problem with the buy both and then decide is that I inevitably end up keeping both!

Yes Dave , i totally concur on this. Some time in the past I was wondering , what to buy and keep, 2301 combo or definition series, that was after my first big G 22k, in the end I bought both sets , and I'm pretty happy with them . This disease never ends . You can never have enough of them .. damn. That is after my big G'S 22k and 33k , and after my wedding present to my wife of my precious definition double 5k series. At the present we have two definition series in the house , two 911dg's, two big G'S, and only one 2301 combo. We have an eight , we have two sr 929's , one sr 838 , and only one ba5k from two .
Don't have any 2302 though or au-x1111 , or even au-x1 , or au-907 in any of it's versions. So there's enough way to go I believe. Not to mention the absolute AU 111G, the tube that I always wanted in pristine order .

Great points by all! The QRX-8001 actually sounds like a really good plan because I also have the spx-8900's as well the spx-7000's. Maybe its time to track one down.

Where are you? Maybe you can hear one at some friendly AK outpost. I'm near Boston if you want to hear a QRX-8001 and soon (if all goes well) a QRX-9001. If you add your location to your profile, we'll be able to direct you.
