Hi folks, I'm not educated as I'd like to be about the ins and outs of particular tables, so I am looking for some advice here. I currently run a slightly modified Thorens TD316 with an Ortofon OM20. I have a chance to acquire a Thorens TD147 with an Audio Technica AT30E for $500. 1st question is: Is that a solid deal? TT is in very nice shape, dustcover not so much. 2nd question, will this TT be a solid upgrade in SQ from my 316, the auto lift (assuming it works) is a nice bonus, but I'm not THAT fat and lazy yet that I can't do it myself. I'd need to also swap carts or get a phono preamp, as my NAD C388 integrated amp phono section is only MM, not MC. Finally last question in a long winded post, any idea what the valuation of the TD316 7/10 cosmetics plays well would be? I may keep it or sell it to absorb some of the cost of the TD147, if it would be a decent upgrade. Replies and knowledge greatly appreciated, thanks!

Okay, thanks for the advice, I heard a friend's Super 160, which is what I learned the 147 most resembles, and it beat the pants off my 316, maybe mine is just not set up correctly?

it's a side move at best, maybe even a slight downgrade. if you want to upgrade, go up the Thorens tree. Consider a TD-125,TD-126 maybe a TD-124 later, deep into the hobby.

Unfortunately, out of my price range currently. Last TD-125 I had a shot at was falling apart, and still sold for $825
 
the" 300" serie is a very good serie and the ultimate real thorens,just behind the td520/521!
the motor(berger) is the best produced by thorens!
the heaviest MDF chassis have a very low resonance(more chassis mass).
brass bearing have low friction and less rumble.
the 3 points suspension with leafs is more steady than the spring suspension,and very easy to adjust!(without dismantling!)
the weight is heavier and for me the look of the 316/318/320 is very elegant!
 
Ended up waiting on the TD-147 and got it for $300 due to being patient with the seller. I figure at that price it's a no brainer. Have to wait for my MC phono preamp to arrive so I can check out the sound, if it's not to my liking I figure it'll be an easy flip.
