IM looking for a set of small speakers to be drivin by my Pioneer system. The amp is a SA-9500II. I mainly listen to 70's and 80's rock. Stuff like Thin Lizzy. One of my favorite bands is Rush. So I need something that is ghod with rock.

I'll be listening to my new RT909 as well as PL-518 with a Stanton 680A cart and my PL-550 with a Grado Black. I also run a RG-1 range expander and a SG-9800 Equalizer.

Room is small say 10X15

When I say small im saying maybe like a good 2 way like a Kappa 5 maybe as large as a 3 way Kappa 6. The 6 maybe a bit much maybe something in the 8" woofer area.

Not set on Infinity. Anything like a Klipsch, Polk, JBL so on and so forth. Saw a set of Kappa 5's that needed refoam at 142.00 on that auction site.

I was checking out that project and really liked what I saw. Whats the best way to pick up something like those in the project? Cost? Website?

They're DIY, of course, with Parts Express components.

Drivers and crossover parts are currently $112.50 the pair.

We designed around a PE prebuilt and prefinished cabinet size, if you don't want to build your own.

That bumps them up into the $250 - $300 range, complete.

[Some assembly required.... ;) ]

Are you wanting to go retro (classic) or something a bit newer?

I own a pair of Paradigm Reference Studio 20's and highly recommend a listen. Don't need a sub, but I paired them with a Paradigm 8" .... I keep it fairly low unless I'm using it to augment a movie.

Good luck with your search. :music:

Do they need the sub? If so is the sub at PE also?
It depends on how hard you want to rock.

They play down to 40 Hz strongly.

If you want deeper bass, then supplement with a sub, preferrably with a highpass filter to relieve the Indignias of low bass duty entirely

PE has a variety of sub kits, yes.

Hi Billbeau, I also believe Rush is my favorite also. Of course the fist time I heard Jailbreak I thought that riff was awesome. Good luck in your speaker search. Have you though about a two way like an EV 12 or 15 trb (coaxiles). Other companies made them also and usually the prices are very reasonable on that auction site. In a room that small the bass output should be fine without a sub.

I have a Polk Monitor 10B. Got it for rock and comedy albums detail and special effects. Does justice to Thin Lizzy Vagabonds of the Western World, Jimi Hendrix Gypsy Eye, ZZ Top Tres Hombres, Alan Parsons Tales of Mystery and Imagination ... no sub needed for enjoyment. It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that thump! And the two midranges make vocals and guitars sizzle.

The seller ran it with a 250 watt amp and the bass and guitars had the attack and feel of a live concert so your results may vary. I pair it with an Onkyo TX-SV-909Pro (110 watts) AV receiver and its still got that sound I've been looking for. Not as good as with the 250 watt amp but still great.

I don't know if they're too big, but they sure do fill the rock quotient.

Either. Whatever sounds good. Those Indignias look good with the curved enclosures! Dont mind DIY!

Hey Zilch, You got a complete parts list for those babies?

Robie did the parts list, the top one here:

Add binding post input terminals, also available in nickel and polished nickel:

And these are the curved cabs, also available in black or maple:

Read up the last couple of pages of the thread; we're still finalizing the crossover, but the one in the parts list is looking very good.

Also, if you're going with these, at least order the drivers before July 31, as their current sale pricing ends then.... :thmbsp:
