Ooh, I love getting to tell people ways to spend their money :D

Have you looked at the Odyssey Audio Khartago stereo amplifier? Only $800, but supposedly the designer/owner for Magico uses it to fine-tune his speakers. Don't know if that's true, but I haven't heard one bad thing about those amps-and that leaves plenty for some excellent speakers.

I don't know what "loud" is for you (for me it's 110db+, for my parents it might be 90db), but for now I'll assume that "loud" for you, is "loud" for me. We have a little over 100 clean watts into 8 ohms to work with if you choose that amp. Let's say to get the SPL we want we pretty much need 90db efficient speakers or higher.

When you said you want bookshelf speakers "or no higher than 4 feet" I assume you mean that 4' or less small footprint floorstanders are ok?

there are so many choices there you could get lost. I would look at JBL (though last time I checked they don't have anything in the 1.5-2k range that fits everything you want.), B&W, Tannoy, too many choices with limited information on your listening habits/finish preferences/a million other factors...

If your idea of "loud" is in the 100db range, consider the Eminent Technology LFT-16. the Stereophile review is lukewarm, but I've generally heard good things about them, and you get a 30 day trial with them.

With cables, that system is under 2k. Wouldn't be the loudest system, but it likely would be a budget system to be reckoned with

Oh if you go used, what about a pair of JBL L5's?

Loud for me is def. in the 110db range. I have no problem with used gear. I like a solid bass... I dont like the Tannoy sound... I have heard JBL and like that sound...
Oh yea, 4' or less floor standing. I'll check out the amp and JBL L5s.
Thanks

Okay...but you may not like my suggestions based on your budget... :D

The Dayton T-amp and speakers are not at all bad. Not much bass, but what do you want from speakers that size? I wrote a review after buying that package.

One of the "best deals going" right now for bookshelf speakers would have to be the Sony SS-B1000 speakers. These can be had for $50 or sometimes less. I think these have a great sound. For the price, they are at least worth a try.

If you need an amplifier...hmm...I'd guess I'd pull the Sherwood RX-4109 out of my hat. It too is not expensive and it has a phono stage built in. Some people have had trouble with theirs, but I have been very happy with all of my RX-4105 (largely identical to the 4109, no phono stage), 4109 and Insignia NS-R2000 (rebadged RX-4109). The only drawback is the size. These aren't compact units. In particular, I have played my RX-4109 hard into four ohm loads and it doesn't seem to mind, while others have had theirs blow up.

Good luck in your quest. I hope you can find what you are looking for.

No problem :)

If you have the room (rectangular with no odd openings or dimensions), JBL L7s might even be an option. Basically an L5 with a 12" side-firing woofer. It fires inward, and properly set up the bass self-reinforces...you won't need a sub.

Your budget would allow the L7s to be optimized, with a heavier pro audio amp on the LF driver and a hi-fi amp on the uppers, paired with an active crossover. Surprisingly that brings them to the next level. Soundstage is just perfect, the bass is extremely musical and tight.

I do have a small Morel sub that was used in a home theater setting, it was given to me- price was right;-)
