Need B&O repair in DC/Maryland area

A friend has an old B&O turntable that needs probably a belt and cart. I have no idea which turntable he has but just need to know if anyone in the DC area repairs therm. I know they have a store in Tysons Corner, but they look like a new sales only sort of place.

Have you asked the store your question?

If they are serious about being a decent audio supplier, they should be able to have somebody service their gear. They should at least have an outside contractor.

I am curious how they respond.

Belts are available on eBay pretty readily, cheap, sized for the various tables. The cartridge options are very few - either buy an old one on eBay with unknown hours, or buy a new one from SoundSmith online - and gadzooks, their prices do start at $250 and go up from there. It is possible too to re-tip the old B&O MMC cartridges, but you will pay close to the SoundSmith entry level price to have it done. I recently found an MMC 20en on the 'bay for about $70, and the stylus was little used, but that was just lucky. Very few stereo shops have old B&O cartridges tucked away, particularly as they can sell them off and make good money doing so. Another thing to do in a larger metro area is set a CL search and watch for people selling off their tables. Sometimes they sell for almost nothing (that's how I got my 1700 table in the first place) and they still have cartridges with decent life, even if the table condition is not so good. I doubt that a current B&O store would touch a Beogram table with a "dung fork," as we say in Monty Python-land, but they could surprise one, it's worth a phone call anyway. GOOD LUCK! They are great tables IF you have one that's been cared for AND you track down a good cart.
