need help finding correct Onkyo remote control.

Hello all,
Wasn't sure where to post this so I'm starting here.
I picked up an Onkyo R1 stereo system.
A-RV401 amp
T-401 tuner
TA-W111 cassette deck
DX-C106 cd player.
Only thing missing is the remote control.
When I search "Onkyo R1 remote" (or any combination of words), I get at least 9 different remotes and prices all over the board. RC-142S, RC-227C, RC-AV20M, RC-279C, RC-201C, RC147C, RC264C, RC289C, RC196C.

Anyone know which remote I need?

R1 is not a model number. R1 is the generic designation Onkyo uses for its infrared wireless remote-capable components. The RC-142S was the original remote for the Onkyo A-RV401 integrated amp. If yours is an all-in-one rack system, then the RC-142S should work your other components, too. I would suggest doing a separate cross-reference search for each component's model number to make sure. If the remote model numbers all match, that's the one you want.
 
Just for the record, it really isn't "R1", it's "RI" which stands for remote interconnect, although you'd never know it from Onkyo literature - and that logo makes it hard to tell.

I have an RC-142S that came with my A8200 integrated. That remote works with quite a few different receivers/amps/decks/what-have-you. In fact, almost anything that has the "RI" logo has the same codes. Even one of the fancy Onkyo/Integra AVR controllers should do the job, too.

I should add a little more to this. Many Onkyo components - tuners, cassette decks, etc. - did NOT come with their own remote. However, if there is an "RI" symbol on the front, then there's a jack on the back marked the same. These components don't have their own IR sensor on the front panel, but if they are connected by an 1/8" jack from one RI connection to the other - daisy-chained - then the remote signal received by the main amp or receiver is passed along to the other pieces.

Other brands used the same system.

I have no clue what the first line means?

Anyway I have a feeling that many cheap universal remote codesets will also work fine for you?

I would start buying them and see which one works first and use that one,returning the others of course!

I do this all the time for customers.

Update....
I spoke to Onkyo. (thanks AVService)
The correct remote is RC-142S (as Blue Shadow said).
This remote is obsolete and replaced by another RC-142S ($46.95 from remotes.com) Thanks transmaster.
The local Onkyo service center quoted me $165 for a RC-199M (no thanks).
I'm looking into a cheap universal remote (AVService again). I have an extra Directv remote hiding somewhere. The codes need to come from the remote mfg (Directv). Not the equipment mfg (Onkyo).

That is the ticket. Put in a search that sends and email and you will get one. I have done this numerous times for different gear. All my used Onkyo has come with the remotes so it was different manufacturers but the Onkyos show up.
