Need help-KEF 107/2 tweeter replacement

Picked up some KEF 107's...all drivers in great condition and they sound very good..but I think the ferrofluid in the t-33 tweeters is likely dried up as the highs are a tad muted....not that interested in having fluid replaced, but it's an option.. KEF offers NO replacement options! Madisound is recommending the Morel 29's and the guy said they are better than the originals tweeters! Anyone out there have any experience/thoughts/ideas about this? Also heard good things about the Scanspeak tweeters, but apparently they would need significant modifications to fit. Btw, the guy said even tho the t-33's and Morels have different rated sensitivity, in reality (based on testing) they would work very well.

My thoughts are if the T33s are still working, replace the fluid. You can do it yourself in less than an hour and for under $20.

It would be a different story if the T33s were burned out.
 
x2 - I just did 4 of them this morning in under 3 hours, including removing and replacing the drivers (104/2) and drinking coffee. Results were spectacular.
 
Ok..thanks!....it's a bit intimidating as I've never replaced ferrofluid..any tips? I'm sure there's youtube videos. However. I must admit I was intrigued when the guy at madisound said the Morel's were better..but I can't imagine they are more perfectly matched.

Thing is, as soon as you put in the Morels, you'll have a great sounding speakers, but you won't really have a KEF 107.2s anymore.

I'd change the fluid and give them a listen. It's a minimal investment. If they are still too dull for your taste, try the morels - but hold on to the original tweeters!
 
Thanks for the info/video, and u r correct..they wouldn't be 107's any more with the Morels..I'll try replacing the fluid first..
 
I just did this a month or so back, pretty easy. Get 2 tubes of the fluid for 1" tweeters. I checked my tweeters (104/2, but same tweeter) for continuity first, got a good answer so it was worth trying. Made a big difference, good luck.
 
Ok..wanted to give an update..after much research and way too much deliberation, I decided to go with the Morel MDT-29's rather than replace the ferrofluid in the T133's..I'm going to need to make some face modifications, but they fit nicely in the holes vacated by the 133's. I'm extremely happy with the sound quality after living with them for several days..the 107's now sound deep and dynamic and I'm listening to everything from jazz to rock with a big smile on my face...would highly recommend the Morels to anyone looking for a T133 replacement.
 
Glad you're enjoying them, but I'm genuinely curious - given the low cost and effort to replace the ferrofluid, how did you end up going straight to alternative tweeters?
 
Well, after consulting with several speaker experts, the consensus was that even if I was able to replace the ferrofluid, the t-33's still wouldn't sound as good as the Morels..and at only 50 bucks a pop I went for it..very happy.

Now you have the opportunity to refill the T33s and a/b them: mono source, one speaker with T33, one with Morel :)
 
Willy and Paddy...agree with both of you and thanks for the tips. I honestly can't believe how good they sound, but I'll likely end up replacing ferrofluid and trying 133's before I make modifications and mount the morels..just in case. Part of the reason I made the decision is because I tend to prefer a bit more sizzle/crispness on the high end and the morels fit the bill..if I do A/B comparison I'll update. Hopefully this thread will help others who are facing KEF 104/107 tweeter issues, as I'm still astonished at the lack of options..
 
Glad to hear the Morels work well... As a long time 107/2 user, it's good know they're an option if my tweeters ever fail.

BTW, the tweeters used in the "/2" were NOT T133s as has been referanced in this discussion. The correct designation escapes me at the moment.
T133s as used in 107s ( & several other models) employed cloth domes, the version used in the 107/2 had aluminum domes, and I've been told, a different gap. This makes them much harder to find than T133s, so I'd try to restore the original tweeters if possible, if only because anyone with /2s would pay dearly for a good pair!

Do they know something the engineers and designers of the KEF Reference Series don't?
Do they understand that by bastardizing the cabinets and installing different drivers the value of the speakers become worth less than the price of those tweeters?
Your KEF 107/2 were wildly expensive when new. The fact that your tweeters are working and you chose not to refresh them is, in my opinion, a colossal mistake.
Please don't take it personal.
