Need help troubleshooting Marantz 4415 channel output problem.

I have a Marantz 4415 Quad receiver that I have been using in 2 channel stereo mode for the past 6 months or so with no issues.

This past Saturday I decided to connect a second pair of speakers to check out the "Vari-Matrix" pseudo quadraphonic effect. Immediately upon powering the Marantz on the front left channel gave out. If I turn the receiver up I can barely hear a signal coming from the speaker.

After much experimentation with the receiver I find that the front left channel works fine with the receiver in AM, FM, or Mono modes. Once you get to any type of 2 channel or 4 channel mode it drops out. The rear left channel doesn't sound like it is much better.

The front speakers are 6 ohms and the rear speakers I connected were 8 ohms. From what I've read this shouldn't have been a problem.

I don't have much experience with the inner workings of these receivers but it seems as if I've blown the output amplifier of one or more channels but only in stereo/quad mode?

Any idea of what it may take to fix this issue? Is this something I may be able to do myself out should I have this professionally serviced?

Thanks.
