Need help with a GE Gerrard turntable/coffee table

I just bought a coffee table/turntable from a friend that wasn’t using it. I don’t know the exact name it’s it’s all new to me but I know I need a new power cord for it I’m just not sure what kind or how to attach it once I get it.

Tubes. That means its old enough that it really ought to have some service first. Not to sound all doom and gloom, but its not impossible for tube amps to catch on fire when jolted back to life after a very long time. At a minimum they need to be brought up slowly and monitored to make sure nothing bad happens.

Changer looks like a Garrard 40 maybe? Something in that family. Probably needs the lube changed, but they all do at this point.

Ha! I was helping my friend’s mother clean out her basement about 10 years back and she had this exact same coffee table phono thingy down there. We brought it upstairs, I cleaned it up and put a record on it just to see if it worked (which to my surprise it did). While the record was playing my buddy’s mom said “this is nice because you can close it up while it’s playing” and before anyone could stop her she swung the revolving door (with the Garrard record changer mounted in it) and slammed it shut. The arm skidded across the record and started playing the label, we just unplugged it and put it in the garage with the Goodwill pile of stuff. I guess that’s why her late husband put it down in the basement all those years ago, she was probably ruining all the records!

BTW - that “Home Music Distribution Transmitter” accessory they are talking about on the back there was a transmitting module that could send a mono version of the output signal through the house wiring. There was a matching receiving speaker with its own little tube amp that you could plug in anywhere else in the house to listen to the music. It didn’t work very well though, the frequency response was very limited and you really had to be on the same phase of your house wiring as the transmitter. It worked on the same principle as those Fannon intercom systems from the 50’s and 60’s. Not sure if that is a picture of the output power cord for that accessory to plug into or the incoming power cord for the stereo, hard to tell without the whole picture.

I've seen those speakers show up a few times on here. Not real useful without the transmitter part, but I guess it does give you a box with a chassis that could be turned into a small guitar amp. Porta-Fi I think it was called? Something like that.

Yes, Porta-Fi, that’s what it was called. Looking at pictures of the transmitter unit it looks like the interlock cord pictured in post #1 is probably the switched power output for the transmitter unit since the transmitter has the male end that would fit into that plug. The same kind of interlock cord would be used for the power supply to the stereo too of course, just facing the other way and wired in to the line side of the switch. If a cheater cord isn’t available one could always use that accessory connector to make one if it’s done safely and properly. Probably better to buy one though if they’re still available.
