Need help with a Sony STR-7800SD

Hello,
I recently purchased a very nice top of the line vintage Sony STR-7800SD receiver. Love it.

I replaced both tuning dial bulbs and the signal strength/center tuning bulb.

Also, while I was giving it a good interior/exterior detailing last night, I very much wanted to remove the tuner dial glass to clean it but could not figure out how. The glass is mounted on the body of the receiver and not on the removable faceplate. There seems to be some type of mechanism on both ends holding the glass in place....but I can't figure out how to remove it to clean the back side of it.

I assume it would probably be similar to the models STR-5800SD and STR-6800SD also.

Any help?

I have attached a few pictures.

By the way, to help any others out, the original dial and meter bulbs are the same and say "Stanley 12V 5W PE" on them. I found suitable replacements at my local Advance Auto Parts store made by Sylvania as shown in the picture.

You'll need the Service Manual for the exploded drawings it will have. This will give you the hints for its removal.

Huge things weren't they? The biggest problems from the Monster Receiver Wars, as I call that era was most people didn't have a place to keep a receiver of such depth. Some were returned because there wasn't a space for it.

Still, the Sony STR-x800 series gear was excellent stuff.

Cheers,

David

Thanks for the reply, but I was hoping to find another AK'er who may have had experience already removing the dial glass from their Sony STR-5800, 6800, 7800 and could give me a simple verbal or pictorial on how to do it.

I have not found any documentation as of yet how to do it.

The service manual is available on HiFiEngine.com but it does not describe removing the glass.

I had one apart years ago but can't remember how to get the glass off.

It looks like there is some kind of clip at the bottom of each end cap of the glass. Can you try and get a shot of them from underneath ?

Bro! I just got a Sony STR-4800 SD from Craig's List for $40, and the FM meter lamp was blown. Thanks for your post! I was able to find a replacement at my local AutoZone - in stock!

Apologies for the old thread resurrection, but I just noticed that the meter lamp is out on the STR-7800 SD I picked up recently and figured I'd do a search on AK.

Thanks for the advice; think I'll roll on down to AutoZone at lunch!
