Need Help With JRiver in the Toledo area

Help!!! Is there anybody in the Toledo area that can lend me a hand with JRiver, specifically importing compilations? I have read all the info furnished by the JRiver forum and for the life of me I can't understand what to do in order to keep various artists under one title, as opposed to scattered about individually. Tagging seems to be my Achilles heel. Please feel free to start a conversation with me and perhaps, at your convenience, you can swing by the casa and give me an education.

I guess while I wait for a knight in shining armor to show me the error(s) of my ways, I'll explain the issue I am having with Jriver. I recently imported "111 Years of Deutsche Grammophon", volumes 1 and 2, to Jriver. These 2 boxed sets consist of a total of 111 CDs. I was hoping that I would be able to find he box sets under the title of "Deutsche Grammophon" on Jriver, click on either Vol.1 or Vol.2 and be able to select the CD I want to listen to. Seemed cut and dry to me. But what happened was the 111 CDs are dispersed among the library by the individual artists. I am wondering how to gather them all up and have them accessible under the "Deutsche Grammphon" umbrella. Hope that made sense. I have searched all over the internet and can't figure out what to do. Any help will be gratefully appreciated.
 
I am not a top flight expert on JRiver nor do I live in Ohio but I think the best way to go may have been to tag each CD as you ripped them. There are a ton of different tags to put the CD # on. When this box set was created it should have had this tagged already. Are you sure it isn't? Pick a track, and look at the tags, make sure all the tags are shown. Then if they are tagged somewhere other than the name of the album you can use the smart list tools to play whatever you want that way..
 
Copy your files to subdirectories

Underneath this subfolders for genre
Classical
Underneath this subfolder
VariousArtists
Copy your files there
Disk1 (whatever they are named)
Disk2

Now that your folders are setup.
In JRiver
Select Menu Audio
Then select Files

In the Location Nominate Your file location

It will grab all the files. See if that works.

I have noticed the same thing with the way JRiver handles compilations. A compilation shows up as a bunch of different albums with the same title and cover. This does not happen with Foobar or Music Bee.
 
I haven't done too much with compilations myself but what I have I haven't worried about file structure. There are so many ways to use Metadata that I guess concerning myself with folders and sub folders hasn't been a priority because within the JRiver interface, file structure is invisible anyway (unless you want to see the actual path). I think of it more like a database. But like any database the data has to be structured the same. This takes a little work when ripping to maintain the integrity of the database. This is supposedly one of JRivers strengths from what others who have thousands of classical tracks have said.

Explain how you rip the CDs. What encoding format do you rip to - WAV, FLAC?

Here is example in JRiver. Need to go through settings. See below left "Options" You need to go through every setting and experiment with results.

I use Windows Media Player to rip discs. This is because I like to rip as lossless WMA. JRiver can't do that now.

I would expect the results to end up in a subfolder "Various Artists" Then each disk as subfolder below that.

IME music player programs don't care about folders and sub-folders. None of the player programs I've tried use them to catalog entries. The only thing that matters to them is the metadata attached to each file. I have +16K FLAC files dumped into one large folder. They (music players) all, except for JRiver, correctly display compilations. It depends on what fields and the order of importance the program database system uses for cataloging. JRiver seems to use the artist for the key field whereas the others I've tried use the album/CD's title as the key field. Yes, music player programs are databases with playback capability.

FWIW: My music server has JRiver Jukebox, Foobar, Nightingale, Virtual DJ, Media Monkey and Music Bee currently installed. JRiver is the only one that doesn't display a compilation as one LP/CD. I use EAC or FREAC to do all my ripping.
 
I don't really find this to be a problem. Here is what I show when I select Albums:

The cuts don't show up when the Artists are listed in the left-hand pane. Notice that The Capitols do not show up in this shot:

Now, this could be a problem also, I guess. Not sure that I did anything special, just burned the disc. On some compilations that other people have compiled and burned, I have to tag it with an album name to keep them together.
 
Most fields in metadata are editable and thus assigning fields new names (such as CD # in place of the same name given in the whole series for instance) is a relatively easy thing to do., Type it once, select all the tracks on that CD and paste. Doing this during ripping is the best time as what is on the CD is all together at that point. I do a lot of tag editing when I am ripping vinyl, which comes with a very blank slate. Other than what JRiver assigns it such as Dynamic Range during its initial scan all fields are blank. I put the artist, date, genre, album, track # (very important) etc etc. All this happens during the rip process. Because I like organization I also place the files (in my case either APE or FLAC) in a 2 level folder structure (Artist>album)using windows file manager, but this is not necessary for JRiver to locate and play all music.

Just get in the habit of looking at the fields after each rip and if it is good (90% of the time), move on to the next CD, or if something is amiss, this is the easiest and best time to make a few changes, and of course you only type it once, and select the rest and paste.. Pretty simple.
 
Wow....can't thank you guys enough. Lots of good info. I rip to FLAC. I really need to bone up on tagging. I want Deutsche Grammophon as Artist....when I click on That, I wanted "111 Years of Deutsche Grammophon Vol. 1 and Deutsche Grammophon Vol. 2 to appear. Clicking on Vol.1 or Vol 2 would give me access to the 55 or 56 Cds respectively. But the CDs are (111) are dispersed throughout the JRiver library alphabetically. I hope that all makes sense. Will give these ideas a go and see what happens. Thanks ever so much!

I think you want the Deutsch Grammophon Vol X Disk XX as the Album - it sounds like it's picking up the Artist and Name. Then you end up with this:

If all the tracks are highlighted and you click on Tag:

Some compilation CDs may not even be identified the same way when you rip them. you could very easily end up with :

111 Years of Deutsche Grammophon Vol. 1
111 Years of Deutsche Grammophon Disc 2
111 Years of Deutsche Grammophon [Disk 3]

You can check as soon as you rip and make sure the tags are the way you want them or, if you are doing more than one, the Recently Ripped playlist should have everything you rip as long as you don't close JRiver. You can go back and tag whatever you've ripped.
 
I tend to go with Album Artist in my sortings. I don't know why, but it seems to be a tag that is not quite as in favor as Artist. I find that with many tags retrieved online, I have to fill in Album Artist.

Classical is always a headache though. But I think I've come up with sorting that works well for me.

For most multi-disc anthology sets (non-classical), I simply renumber them so that all tracks are sequential. So, disc 4 in a set may be tracks 46-60, for instance. (Sets that are a collection of albums, I sort into individual albums.) But I can see where a classical set is something you'd want to maintain each disc. Setting Artist or even Album Artist as Deutches Grammophon, and titling each album with the disc number (like "111 Years of DG Disc 1") should get you where you need to be at. (At least, that's how it would work properly in JRiver for the way I display my libraries.)

MP3Tag is a great free utility to edit tags. Fast, easily sortable for display, and lets you do multiple tag changes easily.
 
Again, thanks to all for the replies and info. I am going to work on this tonight and will report what I am sure will be a successful solution. You guys are really great and I do sincerely appreciate the suggestions. Wish me luck!
