Need help with Sony PS-FL7ii, buttons non-responsive

Hi everyone,

Just signed up and am looking for some help with my old Sony PS-FL7ii. I've read some older posts and there's definitely good knowledge here, so thanks in advance to everyone/anyone who reaches out to help. This turntable has been in the family for decades so I'm keen on keeping it. It was working perfectly 2 years ago back when I had it setup in my living room. Not a single issue. The other day when lifting it out of storage the tray came sliding violently out. I have no clue how it got off the track but it slid free back and forth a couple of times while I attempted to set it down gently.

I plugged it in to see if it would correct itself but it did not. I could hear the motor engage and make some clicks, like the gear teeth were trying to get back on the track, but nothing was moving, so I shut everything down and opened it up. I got the track back in place but noticed a white wire within the bundle on the power side of the unit had snagged and got cut. There is also a lone brown wire in the bundle that had some un-shrunk tubing on it. When I pulled the tubing back, there's about 1.5" of bare wire under but it seems intact/connected.

I spliced the white wire back together and closed everything up but now no buttons on the unit work. When powering it on, the yellow light on the tone arm illuminates and the platter spins, but the buttons are all non-responsive. The lights above them don't function either. I've removed virtually every panel of the unit to look for broken connections but haven't found anything. I'm not an electrician so I have not checked continuity on all the boards; only visual inspection. EDIT: the power supply section is difficult to inspect and must be where the issue lies. Does anyone have tips for opening up that area? Doing so seems to entail dismantling many structural components of the unit, which I'd like to avoid, if possible.

I'm at a loss. The tray motor doesn't operate, nor does the tonearm. So my guess is there's a short or broken wire that supplies power to the button board, but I'm damned if I can find it. I closed up the unit before I thought to sign up and post, so I don't have pictures, but I plan to reopen it again soon and will send pics. Hoping to get some preliminary info or advice for now.

you need to find the electrical circuit and measure the voltages starting from the power supply to see what voltages come to the control elements
 
Finally found time to take some photos. After opening things up and exploring new sections of the unit, the entire thing now fails to power on. Previously the tonearm light would illuminate and the platter would spin simply by powering it on. The platter should only spin when the Play button is pushed, so I assume there was a short or crossed wire causing power to go straight to the motor than to the control board. Now, however, the entire unit is non-responsive. There is voltage going into and coming out of the power switch, but once the switch wires go back to the power board I lose track of where it goes from there. Photos below will show the power section board, both sides of the main board (the control switches) and the culprit bundle that originally snagged when the unit first broke. If anyone has a service manual or can decipher the markings/sections to suggest how to follow the path of power, I would be super grateful. I'll keep playing with it as I apparently have no other choice. I could only find two local shops that advertiser audio device repair but neither of them will do work on linear tracking turntables :dunno:

download this guide. there is a circuit, having studied the circuits, you can measure the power at the control points. perhaps during a short circuit, some kind of transistor broke through, or the microcircuit burned out.
 
I once had a similar case with a direct-drive turntable made in the USSR, I accidentally closed the base of the transistor to ground with a screwdriver, and the motor also stopped showing signs of life. the problem was in the breakdown of the transistor of the sinusoidal signal generator.
 
you need to measure the voltages at the control points, and if there are inconsistencies with the circuit, start ringing the semiconductors in the harness, look for a broken diode, or transistor, up to the microcircuit that controls the power supply of the motor. Alternatively, look at the voltages on the motor coils.

Thank you!!! I've been reading it through and things are starting to make more sense. I found a local repair person who is familiar with this model, so if I get stuck I'll take it in. The help is appreciated nonetheless.
