Hey there!

Currently I have a Marantz 1060 running Thiel CS3.6's... Obviously underpowered. I only have a turntable as a source (Denon DP 60L). I would like to use the 1060 as a preamp and add some sort of amp to really bring the power. What suggestions do you have? Craigslist has a set of Marantz MA700 Monoblocks listed right now. Any opinions about using the MA700s with my 1060? What are the specifics on hooking them up together?

I run my 1060s with the Marantz 140 and I think they make a great combination, I'm not so sure or familiar with the MA700's myself, maybe some else can chime in about those.
 
There isn't much to the connection. Pre outs on the 1060 to the amplifier inputs.

As far as what amp, not going to make a specific recommendation despite having CS3.6 myself. What I will say is to look for amps that have the power you want at an official 2 ohm rating. The CS3.6 are not "amp killers" but they run 2.5-2.7 ohms over the majority of the audio band. So getting something that copes well with 2-3 ohms does help.
 
back.jpg So the single left pre-out on my 1060 would go to the single "input" on this MA700 and then the left speaker would connect to this monoblock in "Master" mode? And same for the right side? Never ran monoblocks before, though it seems self explanatory.
 
Yup. That's it, aside from checking the gain/level control on both amps are set the same. I'd just put them at the THX marks for starters. That's 29dB gain, I believe.
 
I'm starting to think big power isn't really worth it unless your speakers are hungry. I've got a few 510's and swear my little tiny 2015 sounds just as good at moderate listening levels.

Now that I have the big power, I find myself using my 70-80wpc stuff more than anything else.

It might have something to with my overload of stuff and it's such a pain moving things around to hookup.
 
To be honest, I love the way my setup sounds. 75% of the time I have a nice low volume coming at me and I'm able to hear everything very clear. The other 25% of the time I need just a tiny bit more than 30wpc to really make the house shake and cut loose. I just want the ability to crank it, if I need to.

Bear in mind it takes 2x more power than what you already have to sound just little bit louder. 10x more power, assuming speakers can handle it, to raise the level by 10dB, which sounds about 2x louder.
