Need quick help on Yam pre+power amp set up.

Hi Yamaha lovers.

I currently have a Yamaha Pro P4050 power amp doing domestic duties in the living room. Up until now i have just been using the built in attenuators to control the volume. Just having a mp3 player and tuner hooked up to it sounds great.

I have been given the opportunity to buy a Yamaha C-45 preamp for a reasonable $70nz shipped.
I'm mostly interested in it for the input selector and better volume adjustment, And maybe pumping up the bass for movies :-).

Any reason why this would not work?

Well i caved and bought it.

Time will tell if im an optimistic simpleton or i actually have an eye for a bargain.:D

Still the cheapest pre-amp I've ever seen in the NZ market. Usually anything with pre-outs goes for over $100 easy.

Well im now the proud owner of a $70 door stop:thumbsdn:

The incompetent i bought it off ether lied regrading its working condition, or it got damaged in transit due to extremely poor packing.

Where do these muppets come from?

Its with my local fix-it man at the moment. I got the service manual for him. Hopefully he has some luck with it.

To make matters worse other pre-amps have popped up. So not I've got to decide if i want to sink more money in to the yammy of just by something elce.

Got the option of a Denon PRA-1500 or Onkyo P-301 (seller reluctant to ship though)

A bugger as pre-amps at under $100 have been non-existent in the month or so i've been looking. Now they all come at once. girrrr

Not sure what you mean, but on with the story.

My fix-it man called, good news. he said he found the fault, a transistor had gone, he had a suitable replacement.:thmbsp:
I wonder if it blew due to the idiot seller setting it to 110volt mode. (NZ is 230volt)

I still might have a go at the Denon PRA-1500 if it doesn't go too high. I could always do a pre/power combo in my room. LOL

So now I've just got to go give it a quick test and pay him, and i should be a happy camper. :music:

Aren't the plugs a diffierent configuration? How would/could you plug it in?

Sounds like the first of the two options in your above senario might be the better way or thinking. Of course, this sale was probably listed as no returns? Never considered calling an individual that is 'less then honest' a muppet(although, I might just have to use that line someday....funny).


Did your 'fix-it' guy give ya a price on the new transformer?

Its not uncommon to get international multi-voltage electronics in NZ. They often have a turn switch on the back to set it the correct voltage (NZ=230v). How this is achieved technically im not sure, perhaps the transformers have different windings for each voltage?

Older vintage gear can still be found with USA cords and plugs, but its again an international multi-voltage version. You just bend the USA plugs legs out a bit to fit in a AU/NZ plug.

Its not the best as the cables are often only single insulated and the legs don't always fit the best, but it works.

So the Denon PRA-1500 is not a bad piece of kit then? I just noticed it has balanced pre-outs! will this thing actually boost consumer line level to pro? the Yamaha P4050 will take balanced TS inputs. I wonder if its a better fit than the C-45?

PS the Transformer, was fine. It was a transistor that had gone.

The thing did turn on, but the sound that came out was terrible. Not working in my book ;-)

PPS. The turm Muppet can simultaneous be used to describe the lovable sesame street characters, or a most useless and incompetent person.

Well $50 later i am a reasonably happy camper. :banana:

It was a transistor on the regulated power supply that had gone. Possibly from the unit being run in 110volt mode? who knows.

Its 99% up to speed now and sounding AMAZING! it defiantly seems to add a bit more gain into the system, witch is what i needed.

The only things that need a little more work is the headphone output is only outputting on one channel (not that i would ever use it).
The tone defeat switch is dirty and makes a loud pop when engaged/disengaged. (any suggestions on a fix for that?)
Lastly i should get that nasty glue surrounding the filter caps off at some point.

Probably spent $40 to much on it in total, but at lest i finally have the pree /power setup I've wanted :music:

 
Well i now don't feel too bad for spending a total of $120nz total on the yammy.:scratch2:

The Onkyo P-301 went for $100nz+post and the Denon PRA-1500 went for $291nz+post!

It would totally be cheaper to get a "bump box" like the "Samson 'S' converter" for $100nz if i feel i really need the extra gain of -10db (consumer), to +4db (pro line level).

As it is, the current setup is more than loud enough at 1/3rd volume level.

Ha, looks like i'm not an idiot quite yet:thmbsp:

Please post the manual for the C-45 on this web site, I couldn't find one anywhere when I needed one.
 
While im here, can anybody tell me what the "signal" lights on the amp indicate? It doesn't elaborate in the manual.

If i push it hard i can just get them to light up on heavy bass notes. This is at about 1/2 volume (too loud to comfortably listen :music:).

Not to be confused with the clip warning lights (i've never turned it up That loud to make those come on. LOL)
