Need some help with lamps for Yamaha CR-840

I have a CR-840 and none of the dial face lamps, the meter lamps, or the dial indicator lamp works.

I've been looking for replacement lamps but I think that someone had relamped this unit previously. The four dial face lamps are not socket lamps like other people's CR-840s or CR-640s that I've seen but instead they are soldered with short leads. Also these four bulbs do not have the green gels on them.

So, can anyone tell me what are the values for these lamps?

The four dial face lamps?
The four meter/dial indicator lamps?

Thanks for the help.

dgwojo has what you need send him an email and then get the lamps and install them, no need to worry about what they are, he has em all. Hard to find exact replacements with color at one shop so this is the easy way.

There is a thread maybe on general audio forum that asks if folks have seen him recently and he responds with his email addy in that thread.

That's just it, I have been in touch with him and as I said, I think this has been relamped but someone swapped in lamps with leads for the lamps with sockets and soldered them in.

I'd still like to know what the different lamps are for voltage.

Pretty much all Yamaha's of that vintage had bulbs with leads..No sockets. The voltage on those is 12vdc@60ma. Digi-key .....p/n CM7219-ND LAMP INCAND T-1 12V WIRE TERMIN

Searching through AK posts, Merrylander says the later units use 14V 80mA bulbs. The twist locks go into a circuit board to light the dial and the others are wire lead, I think.

What problems are you having getting lamps for this unit from dgwojo? He has em but if you have stuff that has been removed and can't hold the lamps properly, maybe pictures will help us help you.

The last guy to check a CR-840 found four lamps with twist-in sockets and 4 lamps with wire leads including the dial pointer. I've had people find bare wire lead lamps soldered to the contacts of the socket lamp openings, I guess they couldn't find the correct socketed lamps at the time?? :scratch2:

BTW, 14v/80ma is the closest to the original 14.4v/80ma lamps.

Most of my post 1979 stuff has the 14.5vdc @ 80ma the earlier stuff was probably the 12 volters. CR-620 ,CA-2010,CA-1010,CR-1020,CA-1000,CA-800 are all 12 volters. And none of these have sockets...None of my yamaha stuff has sockets. Voltage is easy enough to figure out without a diagram.Measure the voltage to the lamp with a DMM.

Sockets certainly makes it easier to replace..

When using a meter for the lamp voltage, remember some lamps are in series.

Merrylander says the older units, the 12V ones Avionic has mentioned have a 22V supply voltage and the later units using the 14V lamps have a 24V supply.

That's great information.

Clearly I have the dial face lamps that use the wire leads as opposed to the sockets. He is trying to sell me the lamps with the sockets but I need the ones with the leads.

Excellent, thank you for all of the help.

Finally got around to putting in the correct lamps. Thanks again for the help.

Now it looks as good as it sounds. :thmbsp:

Thanks man. :thmbsp:

I'll try to get a picture of the lamps for the dial face soldered in but my point and shoot digital doesn't like extreme closeups much!

Maybe one day I will make a list of models and lamp voltages and Sigurd can post it in the Yamaha list - just don't hold your breath, As a broad rule of thumb the CR-n00 and CR-n20 lines were 12V 60mA - the exceptions being the CR-220 and CR-3020, they were 14.4 V 80mA as were all of the CR-n40 line.

I'm glad that the picture of your illuminated receiver was posted- now I can see that I need not only the tuning position indicator light, but also the meter and dial lights.
I wonder if they're all the same? My unit is dated 6/1980 mfr.

Pop the hood and take a look. In my 640, there were 4 bulbs for the dial in twist-loc sockets that are mounted in a circuit board. The other lamps have wire leads a few inches long.

It's best to match them all before installation, never mix old and new lamps on these, results will be poor at best!!
