Hello everyone

i am looking to turn my basement into a party room and in total the basement is probably 200 sq ft or so, give or take.

i was wanting to buy an mtx loud speaker and it is between these

MTX Audio TP2400

MTX Audio TP1200

MTX Audio TP1100

so here are the questions i have

1) should i buy 2 of those or just have 1

2) what is a good amp. that i dont need to spend a fortune on?

i personally think i should get the two 10" speakers but i dont know an amp

It's hard to know how to answer your question because there is such contrast between the specificity of the speaker models and the lack of clarity about what you are trying to do.
When you ask if you need one or two, do you mean one speaker or one pair -- are you asking about whether you should have a mono system or a stereo -- or are you asking will one pair be sufficient for your space or will two pairs fill it better?
And why MTX? Any special reason?
And are these individual drivers -- the raw speaker -- or are they systems -- the raw speakers in an enclosure, usually two or three speakers in a box?
What amps are you looking at?
What will be the source -- CD, Ipod, microphone, turntable or what?

sorry i was in a hurry when i first posted that. Heres the deal, we are college students and we have a house and are currently kind of remodeling the basement. I have a friend who is in a fraternity and they have two big speakers down in their basement and its awesome

basically we are just trying to play music from them, the source will be either an ipod or laptop

really the only reason i was looking at mtx is because i used to have their subs in my car and they seemed like a good company, also i had seen good reviews for all of them.

by 2 i meant if i should get a pair of them. I think with that small of basement a pair of TP1100's should do fine if i split them up.

so basically im wondering if that is a good idea and also what would be a good amp.

im trying to keep the price of an amp below $200

Sounds like lots of fun! You came to the right place for help. Three more questions to help us help you:

Where are you located?

Have you shopped Craigslist?

Will there be potential for abuse, i.e. keggers, unrestricted access to the stereo?

spokane, wa

havent looked at craigslist yet, i will right now though

it will be in the basement so they should be relatively safe, my friends frat they actually hung them from the ceiling and i was thinking of doing the same.

the electronics portion of it, i am going to try and build and wood case around the amp or something where it wont get touched

Good thinking - flying the speakers is smart. Just be real sure that they are secure. I have seen large, heavy objects fall and it isn't something to have happen at a party. You may want to have that done by a pro.

I'll check out CL in Spokane, too.

yeah i have a good idea of how to do it, shouldnt be a problem.

i just looked and couldnt find anything, but im not sure what youre searching for?

So do you think the pair of TP1100's would be good?

I saw a pair of active Behringers in the Musical Instruments section. While not the best, they are very respectable. The cabinets are heavy plastic and 400 watts of amplification is built in, removing the need for an external amplifier. I can't link you to them here - it is prohibited in this forum.

I am not familiar with MTX sound reenforcement speakers. For that price, I frankly wouldn't expect much. Do you have a Guitar Center near you where you can go audition some commercial sound reenforcement gear? Most Guitar Centers carry JBL, Peavey, Behringer and other brands. You can probably narrow your choices down easier by listening to them. Oh, and be sure to audition the Behringers - they were listed yesterday. They are the Behringer Eurolive B215A if you want to Google them. They are also listed at Amazon for three times the asking price on CL.

Not necessarily. I have heard some of their car audio and it was good. However, I have no experiece with their sound reenforcement speakers, like you linked me to. In general, though, it is very hard to put good components and building materials into a new cabinet for under $100 and still make a profit. Mind you, I am just shooting from the hip here, because I haven't heard the MTX. What brand were you listening to over at the other frat house?

Either one of those would be fine. However, if you can shop some, I believe you can get more for the money, or get a similar system to those you linked for less. For instance, there is a guy selling a Behringer full PA system in Yakima for $500. The model is Behringer BMP2000. You could probably talk the guy down a little, if you were persistent. He listed these on 12/04. The speakers have more to offer, as does the amplifier/mixer. This system may have more funtions than you need, but it does give you a better idea of what your money can buy for you.

ok i will continue to look on craigslist.

however, just in case what would be a good amp to run speakers like those, or ones that dont include an amp

New, I would go with a Peavey IPR series amplifier, specifically the 1600 , unless you can stretch the budget into a QSC or Yamaha.

Used, I would look for a Yamaha.

By the way, a guy has a pair of Peavey Model 115 speakers listed in Seattle for a good price. These would be lifetime speakers, of excellent quality and lineage, for sound reenforcement. If I could swing it, these are what I would try for. He listed them on the 21st.
