Need some turntable setup help. PICS!

This is an old JVC I picked up from a fellow ak'er BHarper. I plan on using it on my third system which will be located near my LP cleaning area. It will be used as a LP Quality testing station. Basically it will used to find out whether scratched lp's play and if they have any distortion before playing them on a better turntable.

I need some help with the setup. I tightened up the arm and mounted a new cartridge but I do not know how to set up the anti-skate and there is a spring that came from the top of the arm that I have no idea how what it does.

It's an old JVC Nivico 5240B.

Here is a close up of the area in question.

I think the spring goes in that hole and mounts to the set screw on the outside. Am I correct? How do I do this? Is the corrosion damage to this area too bad?

did you check vinyl engine for docs on this deck? dont know anything about this one, but id bet the spring slips over that little vertical post behind the whupped piece,,no idea what the other end would do though..good luck

I have the little weight but I didn't need it because the new cartridge was lighter than the previous and I didn't have enough play in the counter weight to get it level. I couldn't find anything on vinyl engine. I really can't find much info on this unit at all.

Well the little lateral weight goes on the post facing away from the LP. It's there to offset the "twist" imparted by the J shape of the arm. The anti-skate must rely on the other little arm and some weights working off a string? The spring may have kept the gimbal at zero lash (slop) by loading the pivot bearings slightly?

But, all that is moot. You don't have the pieces and we don't have the diagrams. So let's go at this one at a time? Does the arm "zero" balance (float)? Can you set tracking force? Does it play a record? What does it sound like? What did you use for mounting distance? Have you used a protractor to get the cartridge aligned?

If you have done all you can and it plays OK, just use it. We may come across other photos or diagrams that will help sort it out in the end, but for now, if it plays OK go for it. It is not scheduled for critical play.

I bought this from Bharper as-is. I knew what I was getting into. If I can't get it working properly i'm not out much.

BrocLuno, I have zero balanced the arm and adjusted the tracking force to 1.5 based on my digital gauge. It plays fine but I haven't played an entire record. I did not use a protractor to align the cartridge because the headshell is designed with two screw holes with no adjustment. Not much can be done there.

The little weight that is shown in the other picture makes the tonearm too heavy in the opposite direction. The counter weight doesn't screw in far enough to balance the arm properly. I removed it and the tone arm will zero balance.

Some tonearms come with the ability to screw in an additional weight in the very back end of the tonearm. If there is one there, that could account for not being able to balance the arm with the lateral weight in place.
