Need speaker suggestions

I was in a similar position. My method is to check Craigslist at least twice a day. When speakers show up I quickly do a search in AodioKarma and decide if I'm at all interested. The city I live in has about 300,000 people. I eventually had way more speakers than I could use so I held a "HiFi" garage sale. One down side is that I lost money on every speaker I bought and than sold.

I was looking for a pair of bookshelf speakers when I went to Capital Auto fest and I found these http://legacyaudio.com/products/view/studio-hd/ admittedly more than he's $300 limit, but boy do they sound great.
According to the write up they were named "Book Shelf Speaker of the Year" by Audioholics in 2015. I'd watch Craigslist and the auction sites and see if a pair pops up.

Genesis is another brand of vintage speakers to watch for. Genesis grew out of EPI and made some great 'large bookshelf' size speakers like the Model 2 and 20.

Watch for rotting woofer foam on all used speakers more than about 10 years old.

If you have a good match between amp and speakers, you can achieve good sound with many brands of speakers. They only have to please your ears, not someone else`s. Although many would scoff at the choice, I have a pair of Bose 301 Series IV that actually sound quite good to me. Don`t be afraid to try something just because it might be a little unorthodox "in the court of public opinion"....

Deep Base....

Sounds like someone needs some Cerwin Vega D-7's, and they are adjustable so your not stuck with just one sound. The HK receiver has some good signal to noise response and the CV's are sensitive enough to handle the lack of wattage. You can pick up an under the radar set of D-7's for around $200. With a good Yamaha EQ a customized sound can be had for a minimum of the usual cost of putting a system together.

Thank you all so much for the suggestions! The EPI's sound really good and like they would fulfill my needs.

I've been looking through craigslist for local stuff and a few options jumped out at me. Hopefully somebody can speak to whether any of these would be worth getting or if I'm better looking through eBay for something more specific.

In my area there are:
KLH model 17
Infinity Sterling series
Polk model TSi100
Polk monitor 40
Boston Acoustic A40
Yamaha NS-244

Thanks for any further input!

Whether it is worth it would depend upon your budget. You may want to try different speakers if the price is right. Of the ones you have listed, I have only heard the Boston A40's and the KLH 17's. Of those two, I would go with the KLH's. The Boston's are decent speakers for their size buy you would need a sub for them The KLH's are a little bigger and have better bass. You would probably need to reseal the surrounds and recap them but they are a classic vintage speaker.

It's like going back in time and buying a new pair of EPI-100's. I bought a pair and love them.

Find a set of Dahlquist M-905s

Better than EPIs, Better than Dynaco A-25s. Better than almost all the small to medium bookshelf speakers I've had in your price range.

I got mine for $50 and a friend picked up a pair last week for the same.

Good luck.

Eric
