Is there a up to date recap and restore parts list available for the sx838? I would like one with all the needed caps and transistors and diodes for a restore if there is such a list around.

Thanks.

The parts list for the SX838 is available.

The list of electrolytic capacitors, transistors &c. an Illustrated parts list and schematic and lots of other helpful information such as the specs /values of the various lamps with part numbers for your SX838 may be gleaned from the service manual which is available for download here for free after a simple registration:

wow, are you in for a surprise..... :D

that's not exactly what he's talking about....

qprhooligan, to see if it is in here, search for awr-055 or awr-064 c8

edit: found something to start... used google...

It sure looked like you asked

for an alternate supplier...

YES YOU WILL BE SAFE ORDERING FROM MOUSER.com ....

NTE is a bubble packing company that repackages cheap transistors that others make, mark up the costs by a factor of 10 , print a "cross reference" for them and shoot them out in a blizzard of cardboard to be stocked nationwide for the unsuspecting all over the USA. Sometimes they are adequate parts - close enough of a match to the cross referenced original, sometimes..... double whammy - they don't make their parts, but they make a cross reference....

looks like I only did the phono amp caps, and I (or someone else) need to add the transistors and diodes for the protection and power supply.

Very nice Mr. Fixer.
I just recently purchased my SX838 and today started making a list of transistors looking for the locations of the 2SA725's, 22Sa726's and 2sc1451's that I have read need to be replaced. So I have the transistors listed but not the diodes and not in the professional way that you have them noted.
I will make a list of the transistors and diodes for the protection and power supply and post them here following your example of how it is done. I have never looked at a schematic in any detail until today..... so if what I can cypher out is right, the correct way to list them is :

Assy number : (symbol) location of part : Part description

example : Protection Circuit - Transistors
awm-025-c Q1 2sc869-C,B or D ( 2sc857k-a) (2sc1515k)
awm-025-c Q2 2sc869-C,B or D ( 2sc857k-a) (2sc1515k)
awm-025-c Q3 2sc945 Q or R
awm-025-c Q4 2sc945 Q or R
awm-025-c Q5 2sa733 Q or R
awm-025-c Q6 2sc945 Q or R
awm-025-c Q7 2sc1384 R or Q

Diodes

awm-025-c D1 1s2472
awm-025-c D2 1s2472
awm-025-c D3 1s2472
awm-025-c D4 1s2472
awm-025-c D5 1s2472
awm-025-c D6 1s2473
awm-025-c D7 1s2473
awm-025-c D8 1s2473

I have noticed some changes in the descriptions from the original protection circuit schematic I was working (AWM-025) on compared to the one in the service manual (AWM-025-C), that is the numbers in parenthesis, I suppose those are updates from the original specification, is that correct?

Is this a / the correct way of listing these?

Nice meeting you Mr. Fixer and goodnight or morning..... I will do the Power Supply tomorrow but I also am dealing with doctors and hospitals so I can not say when and I will even throw in a bonus list of lamp specs.

Thank you for your contribution, that is usually the most involved part of the process.

when I get additional time I will get it into an excel spreadsheet.

edit- oh, I store the data in excel spreadsheets, and what you see posted is just cut and paste text representations of the contents, then this boards printing format steps in (no tabs for example) and scrunches the lines down...
when I do the mouser.com BOM parts order list I just grab the parts number column alone....

thing is, I may have an 838 done at home, and until I get there I will not know.

there are numerous other lists posted in .zip format, these are from my attachments on karma that I downloaded back to myself....

sx-450 caps (only??)
sx-1050 parts

many people contributed labor in their genesis

look to Mattsd's posts for lists and data as well.

most importantly I stick to the one component per line format, with card and component identifier.

Thanks Mattsd and markthefixer it is no wonder that all googles with questions about vintage audio lead to audiokarma.

I suppose the first choice I have to make is what exactly will be involved in my recap. I have read so many opinions concerning this subject that I am dizzy, the only other subject that made my head spin more was about turntable cartridge compliance.

Lightbulbs / Lamps for Pioneer receiver model SX838

I believe this information to be gleaned accurately from the source material but it should be used as a guide only and you should verify the data in relation to repairs to and the requirements of your equipment.

Lightbulbs / Lamps for Pioneer receiver model SX838

The Pioneer SX 838 is a Blue Faced model in the same family as the SX1010 and SX939. It is rated at 50 Watts per channel. The SX838 was manufactured in 1975.

One of the common questions concerning replacement parts besides that of the capacitors and transistors &c. is that of the lights or lamps. The SX838 deserves to have all the lamps in working order.

The following information is taken directly from the Illustrated parts list from the service manual and or the schematic of the SX838. The information is at least as helpful as it is not.

From the Service Manuals exploded view : Page32

Item 76 - Shows 5 fuse type lamps (For the faceplate?)
My service manual is missing page(31) that would show the specifications and part number of this part. The schematic however shows 6 lamps with a spec of 7.5v 300ma

From the Service Manuals exploded view: Page 36

Item 8 - Pilot Lamp for Meter :
8v0.3a : Pioneer part number AEL-015-0

Item 13 - Pilot Lamp for Stereo Indicator:
6v30ma : Pioneer part number AEL-014-0

Item 40 - Pilot Lamp for Program Indicators
( Black push buttoned selectors for Speakers A-B-C )
8v50ma : Pioneer part number AEL-022-0

Item 47 - Pilot Lamp for Program Indicators
( Black push buttoned selectors for AM-FM-AUX -PHONO1-PHONO2-MIC-AUX)
8v50ma Pioneer part number AEL-023-0

The following is taken from page36 of the service manual section titled Misc Parts List.
The parts list does not indicate quantities required.

Pilot Lamp 8v0.3a - Dial Scale - E22-032-0
Pilot Lamp 8v 0.3a - Meter - AEL-015-0
Pilot Lamp 8v50ma -Position - AEL-022-0
Pilot Lamp 8v50ma -Position - AEL-024-0

Note the discrepancy item 47 from the exploded view lists part number AEL-023-0 which is not listed in the Misc. Parts list. Part number AEL-024-0 is specified in the Misc. Parts list but not indicated in the exploded view.

Dial indicator lamp

I have read other threads asking about the replacement of the dial indicator lamp on various models. If I did it correctly this is an image of the dial indicator lamp arrangement, it shows the little tabs that are often spoken of. This example is from an sx626 but should be representative of other models in the line as well.

Great indeed

Great info! I have a SX-838 needing repair so this thread will help tremendously! :thmbsp:

I had began gathering info before my SX-838 had even arrived. I had planned on doing preventative maintenance on it based on the suggestions made here on AudioKarma and was making the lists of caps and transistors and contact / pot cleaning &c. When she arrived I plugged her in and was enjoying listening to all the old vinyl... particularly the stuff that I had not replaced with CD's. The old Tom Waits and J.J. Cale stuff was great to listen to. Today however the old girl started cutting out intermittently,no pops or crackles just goes out for about three seconds then back on. Fortunately I have all this info and things to look for already at hand so I won't start into her resurrection blindly.
Another fortunate thing and proving some of the fortune telling true from many of the Pioneer fans, that is once you own one, you want another.. well I had ordered an SX-780 for downstairs last week and it should be here soon. so while the SX-838 is down for repairs I can still be jammin'. And to be honest I am already working out what model I should try to obtain from the SX-XX50 series... maybe a SX950 or who knows!

Correction?

Since a list was asked for, a list you shall get! :D

All parts were confirmed to be in stock at the time of this post.

I believe that the Power Amp Board ( AWH-031-A) schematic shows 2SA726 not 2SA725( Q1 through Q4). My board has 2SA763's in Q1 through Q4 (AWH-031-A). I believe that MarkTheFixer had stated somewhere on here that the 2SA763's are not problems.
Looks like however I do have the 2SC1451's in Q5 and Q6, although I can not yet read the numbers on them visually.... they look like them.
Have not looked at any other board except for the tuner, but will soon.

I'm fixing an SX 838 for a friend. I am guessing, but is the "position" pilot lamp the one that moves across the dial and illuminates the station frequency?

There are two black wires that supply it an AC voltage of about 8.3 VAC, but no light of course.

And the real question is - mine is either broken off or invisible, so what is involved in putting in a new one? Does the front panel with all the knobs have to come off?

Thanks for the help in advance!

The service manual at HiFi Engine shows, I believe, the lamp you're asking about in Exploded View 2 on page 32:

I realize this post is pretty old, but in case the parts list was never fully assembled: The ECQ caps are no longer available(at mouser or digikey at least). Based on advice on the forums I've gone with either WIMAs or KEMETS. Pay attention to lead spacing since these replacement caps(especially the WIMAs) have incredibly short leads

I've been happy with the similar Panasonic Enn-series caps and MLCC caps from Murata and TDK in positions like these.

But I totally agree about the lead spacing and the width and height of these caps. Some of the Panasonics are quite "fat" and are therefore a tight fit in some areas. I've found I had to switch to other sizes (width and height) in Panasonic film caps to avoid touching other components (and therefore unnecessarily concentrating heat) in some spots.
