Need urgent help! Elac B6 vs KEF q100

Hello All,

This is my first post here. I have been into hifi equipment for a very long time, however for the last 10 years I have been doing most of my listening through my headphones. Recently I have decided to go back to speaker set up. Currently I have 5.1 surroundsound and a small Tivoli set up. I have some floor standing speakers in the storage but they are all too big for my current apartment. So I would like to get some bookshelf speakers. I narrowed it down to below two;

1-Elac b6 - $199 currently on amazon. Great price point and overall speaker. Rear ported
2-KEF q100- $299 currently on amazon. Smaller design, great reviews. Front ported

Now, I am not necessarily asking which one sounds better as I believe they are pretty close as far as sq. My problem is the “port” situation. Due to a small space, speakers will be very very close to the back wall, maybe few inches only. However it will be angled. So the question which one would be more practical/better for my situation.

Most people recommend front ported speakers but some says it wont make a huge difference or I can use port plugs to soften the base. My budget is $300 so no issue on the price however $100 difference is quite large on a $300 budget so, would I benefit a lot to justy $100 difference if I choose to go with Kef?

I tired to research comparison between these two in regards to port situation but couldnt find any, so your help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I have the KEF Q300's which are OK. The ELAC's are classic Andrew Jones design. I just got the ELAC Uni Fi UB5's and the Q300's are not as balanced as the ELAC's. In fact, the ELAC's might be as good as or maybe even better than my Sonus Faber Venere 1.5's and they are way more expensive.

If you can stretch that budget, the Uni Fi's may be the ticket.

Thank you for your response, any commemts on placing elac’s very close to the back wall?

i use the Q100's as the mains in my HT set up. the are on shelf's and sound Awesome. dont know anything about elac's though. i have used the Q100's in a 2.1 set up on stands as well with vintage receivers and they were pretty good with that as well.

Thank you for your response. I am actually planning to use them with my vintage onkyo tx-4500 reciver and technics 1200 to listen my old lps. I am totally thinking to remove my 5.1 set up. I love surround but for listening music stereo sounds much better. At least to me :-)

Well the KEF's use a thinner cabinet and that may be why. There shouldn't be much difference for the Q100 vs. the Q300. Just remember YMMV.

Thank you for your response, woukd you mind to tell me whee did you see the 2’ requirement for the Kef? On their manual it says 9 inches would be ideal.

i have my Q100s 2 inches off the rear wall and overhanging the front of the shelf a quarter inch and like i said earlier they sound Awesome

Well I’m going to bring this thread back to life because I am deciding between the same 2 speakers right now the elac b6 or the kef q100 the kef being 50 bucks more.

One thing that confuses me is warm vs. bright. I have heard the kef described as a more warm sound while the elac is more bright. While at the same time reading that the elac has much better bass response.

So if the elac has a more bright sound but with more bass then wouldn’t that make it a nobrainer in favor of the elac?
