The Aztecs look like late model Gauguin III's, there are at least a few AKers with various models of Aztecs. i had a pair of early Gauguin III and found the sound to be much like a cheese grater on my ears. However, they were very early models and i believe later versions went thru a good bit of development especially in the crossover network which likely resulted in a much more listenable speaker. The Aztec cabinets are well built and well finished, i re-purposed mine.

You certainly can't go wrong with the Wharfedales at that price, i've never heard a wharfedale that sounded "bad".

The build quality on the Wharfedales is great. Beautiful solid cabinets, high quality drivers, etc. Best of all, they sound very pleasant. Easy to live with.

Ive got some old wharfs, dont know the model and the grills don't come off, I dont think the'yre so great, but back in the seventies, I knew a guy that had aztecs with 15" woofers that were just awsome. I know most poeple on here say the'rye just OK, but I remember them as just sounded so smooth and beautifull, and rediculously loud. Look, I think wharfs are all over the place, but when do you ever see aztecs, I say, get the aztecs. Only thing is, I don't remember my guys aztecs as being horn loaded, but it was a long time ago, maybe they were, and the cabs and grills look the same. Enjoy wichever ones you choose though!

I had the chance to listen to both and went with the Aztecs. I can report they are crazy lound, but have a very clear smooth sound. I am loving them.
