What'd be a fortune, or what'd you be willing to pay someone to troubleshoot this equipment and tell you exactly what's wrong with it?

you could try a few things
1. are speakers hooked up at both ends?
and still no sound from left or right or both, some sound, or comes and goes?
2. is there a selector for different sets of speakers (A, B)? try either after #1
3. try the headphones, some sound, no sound?
4. is there a (tape) monitor switch? try in/out or on/off. still no sound or some sound.
5. rotate input selector and leave on tuner - tuner will either have interstation noise or a broadcast signal.
6. try all combinations of switches other than #3, sometimes a switch (like loudness) is wonky.

if you get this fixed, it will be cheaper to have the cause and get a "fixed" price for the exact fix.
Like "my car doesn't run" versus "it needs a PCV" - one is $5 DIY, the other may be hundreds.

the main question is whether this did work at sometime earlier, if it didn't or you don't know,
then it may be cheaper to spend whatever funds you have for fixing this, on another
unit that you will ensure works.

I'd like to know where they have a two year class to work on stereo equipment, like sign me up now....

You'd be tought very basic knowledge. Not enough depending on what you aim for.

If you get deep into studying electronics then you'd be able to work on anything related, including hifi. It's nothing out of the ordinary. You wouldn't be designing the thing, just servicing it. It doesn't matter if it's a MRI scanner or a AM receiver.

its called "Electronics Technology" at your local community college.
without it you cant fix squat. But I supplemented my US Navy Electronics training with it just to be sure.
Served me well for 30 odd yrs. at Hewlett-Packard company.

scored some model 17,s today..soundin good an rich, but o no....not much treble but a little from woofers..so i really gave the togle switches a lotta movement..then i swapped the tweeters with my modell 33 front ported klh speakers, tweeters sounding wonderful ,,i even tried to make some cleaner go into,or seep into area of toggle switches,im sure glad my ar2ax,s responded good with a little turning when i got them, wow very trebly, but on these model 17,s i got nuthin.i have no clue what to do,paid 30 bucksfor them..no clue how to get to pots of if gummed up,or how to clean etc,i can sure do it great on old marshall an fender and other guitar amps,,this is killin my back..woofers sound great though,,these have 1970 stamped on them..any ideas,i dont know how to get to potsto spray an clean etc..help.....soon..im glad i couldtest an swap tweters around with my 33,s so it aint the tweeters thats a fact.........

there is a saying going around................you get what you pay for.
sounds like you got $30 worth of speakers.

thats horse manure...sometimes,,they sound good an i took off the tweters an they sounded great both of em,testing on my 33,s...again,i took one apart all insulation,an sprayed cleaner etc into pots or whatever best i could an put the one all back together, and still no tweeters, the insulation an electronics looked brand new..i think someone has been in here an got the tweeters wired wrong,my back is troublesome along with my feet,an i know i was breathing the pink stuff,i was so mad an bewildered i didnt care,an i worked the toggle switch back an forth abunch,no sign of static, screw these for now so i hooked up my killer ar 2ax,es back home,o what speakers,,wonderful, but it all wont beat me,i couldnt find anything on youtube about klh 17 cleaning pots or correct wiring..yet......and about gettin what i paid for i got these ar2xa..speakers for 277.00 shipped an in beautiful cosmetic, and sounding..perfect...........tell me more o k.im 61 and i know plenty.but evidently not enough..........i also got a few years ago a marantz esotec and pre amp for 100,an soldway cheap for 900..and a sansui au 20000 for 65,sold way cheap for 500,we didnt know at the time,so say somethin nice or not at all,i,ll beat about anyone an finding an buying an selling,an i still know where beautiful mcintosh speakers just sit,at 25% off..incredibly nice..i,ll take ar over there speakers though..

What pots do you refer to?

BTW, this is Model 17's internal wiring diagram.

on the 17 maybe its not pots, but i soaked all i could see..and id have to revert back to weed to understand what you sent me,im a lead guitar player, and flyfisherman,i dont understand this..i got so tired messing with these speakers experimenting with the one..but i got 4 great workin tweeters on the 17,s and my model 33,s together,i was amazed at how new the pink insulation an the little square electronic board or whatever it is. i have sprayed an cleaned many pots on old marshalls an fender amps etc,an tube stuff, but this was new to me..one thing i like about the a r speakers is incredible clean clear accurate highs.i have got to have good tweeters.i,ll eventually work it out..just very flustered,i have bought little crap bose 301 series 111 for this price an sold them..there o k just barely..hey thanx anyway..i was about afraid to breathe this stuff an i felt kinda strange for a few minutes, scratchy throat etc,but i move fast to get it done etc.......

The diagram above is pretty simple stuff in spite of appearing the opposite to you. Just check out the crossover in your speakers, read what's stamped on the components, and compare the wiring with the diagram. At least to know if the tweeters are wired correctly (guess this was your first doubt. If the tweeters are indeed wired right and still don't work on the 17 but do work if you wire them separately, then the 8MFD capacitor is probably bad. Strange that it went bad on both speakers crossover though.

i can tie you a size 26 tryco trout fly, rather minuscule, but if you dont know about fly fishing,or tying them,it would be a disaster for you to comprehend,im not good at math,or testing things on the speakers,it is a weird thing,an klh tweeters usually sound pretty good, not as good as a r of course.i dont know what to do,im still tired an flustered and dont wanna deal with it all again.thanx though,i mean its funny they both immediately sound great as i put them in place on my model 33,s but theres got to be a logical reason,logic..the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.lol..maybe i,ll have a friggin bonfire with them............no that would be hypocritical,i love and have had nearly all klh,s best stuff through many years..the model 20 is still one the best sounding systems //fm and turntable that i ever heard when fresh, and soon i,ll have a 24 to monkey around with, maybe its the most powerful klh at 40 watts per channell, even though the klh twenty sounds way huge an plenty loud enough great treble an bass,if pretty fresh etc..like a good ole marantz that are hard to trust if 40 years old and nothing done to them.......yes,both at the same time, weird,an i sweari wish i woulda took pics,it all looks new,but speakers are stamped 1970 ..i eventually want all acoustic research, either a pair of the ..fives,or ar3a,oreven another pair like these ar2ax,there beyond incredible...........

Check capacitors very famous for going bad in old KLH you can check tweeter continuity while you at it
Nice speakers well worth $30 and then some! ; - )
